  • 1.  Cognos Temp space Issues resolution

    Hi All,

    This is regarding the temp space issue in Cognos while executing the reports.

    We have been receiving many issues from customer end regarding this, like some specific reports failed to ran due to temp space issues in cognos (temps space of cognos running out of space).

    Hence, we would like to know, what would be the best approach for handling this temp space getting full during large returned queries,while executing the cognos reports other then increasing the size of the cognos temp space and deleting the temp folder at regular intervals.

    You say Cognos is running out of temp space. Is that your database server running out of temp space or the Cognos application server?

    Hi,

    Yes Its both the temp database space getting filled during execution of reports and also the temp space (temp folder).

    Is their any option in Cognos FM or Report studio which will limit the reports usage of the Temp DB while execution.

    Please let us know the best options for Temp database space getting full during large returned queries in the reports.

    So if you open a support ticket for this issue you will be asked to review your SQL statement and make some modifications. If you are having both temp physical server and DB being maxed out you need to expand both. Maybe you should include some filters in the report to retrieve a smaller subset of data. Your group by clause etc is what the application server is using to format your result set needing additional local processing. Limit your result set and see if it helps the issue.

    There are times that you will see temp space violation messages. You need to determine if it is the physical disk space you have defined in your Cognos Configuration in which case you need to expand the volume to a sizable amount. If there errors are related to the Cognos metadata database you need to work with your DBA's to expand the tablespace that temp is hosted on. Either way perform those two steps, and also look into optimizing your reports. You might also consider changing your reports processing from limited local to database to ensure the database server is handling the chunk of the work.

    Dear @Archana Sowrirajan,

    In addition to suggestions in this thread,

    I suggest a RCA to identify the problematic components.
    Appropriate solution can be suggested based on aforesaid observations.

    Deleting the files should be considered as temporary solution.

    Can you please help with name/ extensions of files that are repeatedly maxing the temp space?
