Report Scheduling

    Ver 11.1.4

How would you schedule a report to run on (exactly) the 1st and 15th of each month using the basic scheduling tools available for reports?  Not including triggers and creating 2 versions of the report.

Create a report view of the original report. Schedule the report on the 1st and the report view on the 15th.

I guess that would work if the following is true.

    1.    I create report A.

    2.    I create a view of report A as A-view.

    3.    I schedule report A for the 1st

    4.    I schedule A-view for the 15th.

    5.    When the 15th comes it runs the underlying report A.

    6.    If I change report A, A-view reflects the change when it runs

But I still have to create 2 different independent schedules, a report schedule and a report view schedule, right?  I guess the benefit is I only have 1 physical report, but have to maintain 2 different schedules, right?

Thank you for your workaround and solution.

    Hi Jerome,

Yes, you're correct. The more elegant solution would be to have a trigger that runs on the server and fires on the 1st and the 15th. But without that I can't think of a better way to do it. The report view (A-view) will refer back to the report (A) so any changes that you make there will be reflected in the view.

    Cheers,
    Chris

Thanks Chris.  I guess I only have 2 options, your trigger solution or an event.  It would be nice if within the report scheduling panel you could supply more than 1 date for the month mode.  Hint, Hint to designers of Cognos.

    Hello Jerome,

In Schedule select weekly and set "Run every" to 2 week(s).

    Thanks

Thanks.  That may come close, but I don't think that will run exactly on the 1st and 15th, even if the start date was the 1st or 15th.

You can create two Jobs using same report and schedule Job to run at different time.

Thank you Gupta.  I'm trying to get around maintaining two schedules requiring delivery change when that changes.  I guess I only have 2 options, a trigger or an event.  It would be nice if within the report scheduling panel you could supply more than 1 date for the month mode.  Hint, Hint to designers of Cognos.

I often run into requirements to have the same report run in different ways, so the best way to handle this is to create a Job that simply runs the same report multiple times, each execution can have its unique settings such as prompt values, output types, recipients, etc.  Unfortunately, as Buddhi mentions, in order to run at different intervals, you actually do need to have multiple schedules, so this would require multiple jobs, but this does eliminate the need to create multiple report or view entries!

Thanks and yes, what you say is true.  But that still requires maintaining multiple report distributions.  I know you can create a report distribution list, but that requires admin capabilities.

For end users, Subscription option is available to schedule for desired frequency and filters in case that works.

As standard practice, we will have daily/weekly/monthly jobs where you can add required reports to run and monitor.

Another option which may work is to use Event Studio:-

You can create Event Studio with condition to check if day is 1st of 15th day and run the subsequent steps only when condition is met. This way you have to schedule only Event.

Yes, that's the route I took.  After taking that route, I noticed that Events do not show in the Recent history list view, although jobs, reports, data sets and active reports do.  v11.1.r4

A possible work around... If you are on CA 11.1.7 and have External Application then  you may possibly use REST API to trigger same report runs multiple times.
