Exploration – Curiosity's new best friend
You're looking at a beautiful, powerful dashboard. It's easy to read; it gives you all the info you want. In fact, you can easily spot anything that's unusual or surprising. And you do. But then what? How do you dig into your results?
Cognos Analytics makes it pretty easy to modify your dashboard or add new visualizations to see what you can find, so that is certainly an option. But, when your dashboard is beautiful and works really well and you're not exactly sure what you're looking for and might find, why mess with it?
Especially when you can explore your data using Cognos Analytics 11.1's new Exploration feature. Exploration is a new workspace within CA, designed for the free flow of ideas as you look for answers to business questions. With a low barrier to entry, any user can get started quickly, either directly from data or from existing visualizations in a dashboard or story.
During exploration, you can easily manipulate your view by adding data, drilling, changing visualization types, comparing, or accepting one of CA's suggestions. You'll immediately notice that visualizations in Exploration are augmented with supplementary details, including natural language descriptions that give you more information than what you see from the chart itself. We'll also let you know when there are influencers of any of the data elements in your visualization so you can easily discover what those are.
If you have new data, Exploration will get you started with a view of relationships. We don't mean a picture of your model; we mean statistically determined relationships that our built-in smarts discovered while reading your data. When you select the fields that you're interested in, we'll automatically build some visualizations for you and before you know it, you're on your way to a better understanding of your data's hidden secrets!
Exploration makes it effortless to iterate and try new things. Whenever you're ready, it's easy to copy and paste the new insights you've discovered into a dashboard, story, or report and operationalize them so everyone can benefit.
We urge you go give the new Exploration capability a try. If you're curious about your data, it just may become your new best friend.
