  • 1.  Data Modules - Access control and connections

Being new in Cognos Analytics 11.1 we want to use Data modules coming from Transformer Powercubes. But we are a bit confused on how to organize and setup the different data modules for different user groups, where to save them, how to control access, how to setup the data server connections and the underlying connections, how to give access to the same, etc., etc.

Is there any best practise here or guidelines on how to do it?

In Cognos 10 we had Cube Packages in a seperate folder and access was controlled from within the Transformer model and access to the cube package itself.

Hi Dagur, Cognos permissions is something that my team struggles a lot with. If you happen to find any best practices or discussions on the subject, I would be interested to learn about them, too.

We only have a couple of data modules that are not open to all users, only the report views using the data modules, hence I have not come across this issue, yet. Are you saying that the cube based permissions are not applied in the data module created using the cube?

    Thank you.

Hi Adrienne, we do not use cubes as a data source for a data module as cubes can be used directly when creating dashboards etc. But I see your point in creating a data module for combining two different cubes into one data module.

However we are more looking into creating a data module with direct database connection and the issue of creating a data server connections with underlying connections and how to control access to these are confusing to us.
