  • 1.  Editing a job in CA 11.2

    Posted Wed May 19, 2021 07:06 PM

IBM got rid  of the Classic View that  was used to edit jobs in CA 11.1.5. My user is unable to edit his jobs in subsequent releases. We have delayed upgrading from 11.1.5 for that reason. He tried it in 11.2 on the sandbox. It still doesn't work. Has somebody figured out how to edit jobs in the 11.1.7  or 11.2?

    Thanks,

Can you be more specific? The classic view is gone, but you can still edit jobs...they just look different. The option that I miss most about the classic view is being able to see where the report in the job are saved - I tend to run Motion to find that information out now. If anyone knows of a way to get to that info in the new view that would be really useful.

This feature has been replaced since 11.1.7. The scheduling interface was updated. You should be able to hover to the right of the job and click on the ... ellipse to edit the job. In case you are upgrading from an older release you will also have to grant access to the job functionality under Manage> People> capabilities.

    Thanks

    Good morning Kwadwo,

I assume you know how to edit jobs using the native 11.1.7 and/or 11.2 interface, and that the job steps do not appear in the interface to edit, or they throw an error when you attempt to edit this way.

There have been issues for multiple releases with the job editor - esp. when a report that is referenced in the job is deleted.  I've found that the times I have to follow the process below are fewer and fewer as I implement each new release... but it's a good process to know for those times when you run into this sort of problem.

    Here's the process:

    1. Enable the Cognos Connection portal by following the directions here:  https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/how-display-version-10-cognos-connection-home-page-cognos-analytics-11
    2. Log into Cognos using a url of this format:  http://app-server-name:9300/bi/v1/disp       This will present the same login screen as for the standard UI - but you'll notice some extra info has been added to the URL ("?legacylogin" and so on)
    3. You'll be presented with the Cognos Connection (from v10.2.2)
    4. Navigate to your job.  Click properties.  Make the changes needed.  Click OK to save.
    5. Log off.

    Good luck!

So the million dollar question is, how can we edit this jobs that have the broken/missing reports?  We're on 11.1.5 and have unfortunately discovered this bug after doing a pretty big cleanup of our content store (in preparation for converting to DQM).  Have run for too many days to rollback.

So we have quite a few jobs with broken steps.  Trying to Edit them just opens up a new job.  We have several jobs with dozens and dozens of reports in them.  If we have to recreate them all from scratch, as many reports have their own distinct run settings, there'll be a riot from our report developers.

How can IBM let these kinds of critical bugs escape their QA/QC testing in the first place?

    Hi Wayne,

The process I outline above is the way to edit these jobs in 11.1 until such time as a fix is released from IBM.   You need to leave the 11.1 interface and use the Cognos Connection interface to do it, but it does do the trick.

I understand your frustration.  I also know that IBM is aware of this bug and I do expect they'll fix it.

In my opinion, the best thing to do is open a ticket.  The more people that open a ticket when they experience this (or any) issue with the software the more IBM and the development teams there are aware of the issue and its impact.  Many are reluctant to open tickets, I know... but I feel its the best feedback mechanism we have.

    Best,

    Rich

    Hi Richard,

I apologize, I thought that link to the IBM support doc was what we'd already done to enable the "Classic View" links in the 11 interfaces.  I see now it's definitely not but I need to test it on my test server to see how different the UI is before I unleash it on the masses.

I also wanted to see if I can use a tool like MetaManager (we have it) or Motio to edit the XML removing the bad report links.

Anyway, thanks so much for posting that option!

    Best regards,

    Wayne

I also use the old 10.x connection portal in my environment. Whenever I need to modify a job I do it in the old portal. There is another bug that surfaces when the job is modified in the 11.x portal. Using the 10.x portal is a workaround for that bug. I did create a number of tickets with IBM for various bugs in the reporting interface and they said they fixed them all but this one still exists.
