PAW v2069 - Application Synchronisation Issue

  • 1.  PAW v2069 - Application Synchronisation Issue

    Posted Wed November 10, 2021 05:20 AM
    Hi All,

The following issue I am about to highlight has already been reported to IBM Support, although so far we have not been told if this is a known issue or whether this will be addressed in v70

We recently carried out an upgrade on our internal development environment from v2067 to v2069 and found that the synchronisation was not working when a book was opened within an application. The same books work fine when opened outside of applications. At first we thought this may have been an upgrade issue or possibly something wrong with our books but we was able to reproduce this problem very quickly on the business partner cloud environment, which helped us to rule out an upgrade issue and because we used a different set of cubes for testing on the cloud server, we could rule out a book issue as well.

The first problem you notice when opening a book in an application (under v2069) is that the view will sometimes lose the dimensions.

If you then re-size the application menu a bit, the dimensions will come back. Following this issue, the main problem is that synchronisation no longer functions on the book. In this example below, changing the dimensions does not impact the view, even though everything is set to sync and this all works fine when the book is opened outside of applications

This is easily reproducible in v2069 with creating a simple book with a view and some synchronised dimensions. Then simply add the book into an application and you will see the difference between opening within an application and without.

I guess I am slightly surprised that this issue was never picked up but maybe not all customers work with applications in the way that we do as partners and developers. It's a very fundamental piece of functionality that has worked perfectly fine since the new experience was launched.

Also, before I forget to mention. We tested this issue in multiple browsers (Edge, Chrome) with different people testing and we saw the same results. I am 99.9% certain that this is a software defect and likely a result of changes that have been made to the application menus (which were not documented!)

    Regards
    Ian

    Hi,

Just a quick update on this. The issue seems to be more reproducible when you open the application for the 2nd time and view the book.

When you open the application the 1st time, the dimensions will display and synchronisation seems to function (although we have seen examples where this is not always the case). If you close and re-open the application, the dimensions on the view will be gone and the synchronisation is broken. From what we can tell the book never works correctly in the application from this moment, no matter how many times you close and re-open the application. The only good news is that the book is fine if you open it through Reports & Analysis and not with an application.

    Regards
    Ian

    Hi Ian,

I am slightly gobsmacked that nobody else has noticed this serious flaw with version 69, obviously cloud customers are not yet using applications that extensively.

I am also slightly gobsmacked version 69 was released with this defect. Hopefully it will get fixed by version 71!

    regards,

    Mark

    Hi Ian,

I'm digging into this.  I can reproduce the problem in 2.0.69 release, but not in the upcoming 2.0.70 release.  I will try and confirm that we know about this and made some change to address the issue.

    Thanks for pointing this out.

    Hi Stuart,

Thanks for the update. I was going to test v70 this week just in case this issue has been picked up and resolved already. It sounds promising that you can't reproduce in the upcoming release.

    Regards
    Ian

    Hi @STUART KING

I was able to test this on v2.0.70 this morning on the IBM Partner cloud environment, following the release overnight and unfortunately, the issue still exists. If it helps, below is a link to a video on google drive that I recorded this morning and shows how to reproduce the issue. We recorded a similar video in v2069 last week for our IBM support case

    Application Synchronisation Issue

This issue is going to be a huge problem for us, as our product applications no longer function in these latest releases and we have several customers who are close to signing up with IBM Cloud very soon. We simply can't deploy our products to them with the way workspace is currently functioning and in our opinion, this needs to be addressed with a fix pack or patch asap.

    Thanks
    Ian

    Hi Ian,

Our development team is still investigating.  I'll check  in with them today to determine if the root cause has been identified.

    Hi @STUART KING

We had a response back from IBM support today to tell us that this issue was not reproducible in v2.0.70, however; it clearly is given the video I have recorded and supplied in my previous reply. Just to be on the safe side, I checked IBM cloud again just now and the issue is still there and is very easy to reproduce.

We have just sold IBM cloud to a new customer and will be deploying a product (TM1 Model) to them that relies on applications for the front end delivery.  If this was an environment that ourselves or the customer were hosting, then we would recommend v2.0.67 (last known working version), however; with IBM cloud we are restricted to the latest release and as things stand we can't deploy anything application based, especially with the way things are currently working.

Anything you can do to raise this issue internally as a high priority would be appreciated.

    Regards
    Ian

    Hi Ian,

Agreed, this needs resolving a.s.a.p. because as things stand Applications are broken.

Root cause has been identified and a solution will be provided in the Workspace 2.0.71 update.   We will expand our test coverage for synchronization in Plans and Applications.

@Ian Moy are you interesting in talking to the Planning Analytics product team regarding the Plans and Applications features?  We would like to understand how you are currently using Plans and Applications, and get your input on the roadmap for this feature.

    Hi @STUART KING

Thanks for the update. Fingers crossed, v71 will hopefully arrive just in time for the customers project deployment in January.

I am more than happy to get involved and show the product team what we are using applications and plans for. The latest product we have developed relies heavily on applications in order to make navigation easier for the end user, which is why this issue was really critical for us. Please let me know what you need and I will help as much as I can.

    Regards
    Ian
