IE11

    Posted Mon September 20, 2021 03:59 AM

My company are telling me they need to decommission IE11 in favour of Edge and Chrome, due to security risks and IT policy.

I know in the past that PAW and PAfE were reliant on IE for some of the visual elements. Is this still the case and are there any plans to remediate this dependencies ?

Apologies if tis has been asked before..

IE11 is no longer a supported web browser for PAW, only Safari, Chrome, Microsoft Edge Chromium, Firefox are supported browsers. You will however need to make sure your PAW version is up to date as I believe there has been a patch to fix a CORS related issue that was triggered when the browsers tightened up the security on CORS.

    Hi Phillip,
Simon correctly listed all the browsers that are supported now:  Safari, Chrome, Microsoft Edge Chromium, Firefox. The IE is not on the list of the supported browses any longer, so you'd not need it to PAfE. If you're on Windows, the best browser to use would be Chrome.

    Phillip,
For you future reference you could use that link https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/planning-analytics/2.0.0?topic=installation-software-requirements
Then run  Software Product Compatibility Reports tool to check the compatibility of the product for the Web Browsers. In your particular case you'd see the IE in the list, but if you go into the notes, you'd see that it's not for PAfE support. Hope this helped!

I am now right royally confused as I had raised a support ticket, and they have come back pointing me at that same report but told me for PAfE I had to look at the prerequisites on the Planning Analytics Local report, which shows IE as a prerequisite and states that there are no plans to remove this.

With Microsoft phasing IE out this will leave people unable to use the tool if this is right... ???

I only mentioned PAW in my first message, and all the information still stands.
PAX on the other hand, according to the documentation has a dependency on Internet Explorer 11.

From this I expect that Internet Explorer 11 needs to be installed on a users machine for PAX to work, but the users will have no need to use Internet Explorer with all the web interfaces accessible through other browsers. Internet Explorer 11 whilst being decommissioned is currently still in support until June 2022. Microsoft Edge also has an IE mode that enables backward combability and will be supported through at least 2029.Lifecycle FAQ - Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge | Microsoft Docs

Whether the app would continue to work with Edge installed instead of IE I don't know. I would also imagine when IE does go out of support, IBM would release a updated PAX version that doesn't rely on IE, but an IBM representative would have to answer that.

    Thanks Simon

The issue really is that with Support disappearing by Jun 2022, companies are already in the process of decommissioning it. If there really is a prerequisite in place, I would have hoped that IBM would have a plan in place with timescales which could be communicated so that they can ensure services are not disrupted.

    Phil, Simon,
There is the approach to consider for IE 11 and PAfE.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 is required for use with Planning Analytics for Excel. We do not recommend uninstalling IE 11 as doing so could affect applications that require IE 11 runtime DLLs and the frequency by which security updates around them are received. A potential alternative is to block the execution of IE 11 while maintaining it installed on the system. Reference doc: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-US/lifecycle/faq/internet-explorer-microsoft-edge#if-a-customer-has-turned-off-the-internet-explorer-feature-but-has-third-party-software-that-uses-internet-explorer-runtime-dlls-how-can-the-internet-explorer-runtime-dlls-be-updated

    Thanks Svetlana

As I said, it is the companies IT policy to uninstall it.

While I can stall them, I cannot stop them.

I've been trying to understand IBMs roadmap to resolve this issue but as far as I can tell there is none. This amazes me especially as the discontinuation of IE by Microsoft has been a planned activity for a long time now.

Phillip, I have been doing some testing of the PA stack under Windows 11, and have found this which shows how to use 'IE Mode' with Edge:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/450116/how-to-enable-ie-mode-on-microsoft-edge.html

Testing with PAFe, my results have been a bit variable - sometimes it works and sometimes it shows a blank task pane. But it looks as if this could be a way forward, assuming IBM and MS sort themselves out.

    Hi David,

Thanks for this, I've had the following response from IBM's PA support team:

PAfE is not using Internet Explorer browser application itself. It is using IE's MSHTML (Trident) webview engine. Internet Explorer platform (MSHTML/Trident), including WebOC are clearly unaffected of the Microsoft announcement. Trident as a part of Win10 is going to be supported by Microsoft to 2029 or longer.

Therefore I have been assured that regardless of IE being removed from our machines PAfE will continue to work.

    Kind regards

I guess we're a little early on this in terms of IBM updating the supported environments for Pafe given that IE11 isn't going to be removed until Jun '22, but it would be good if "Edge with IE Mode On" became formally supported soon.   (Assuming of course there isn't a plan to update Pafe such that it does not require Trident anymore)

We get some raised eyebrows now when we say IE11 is a pre-requsite for Pafe and the closer we get to June the higher they will go. As Phillip says IT departments are already removing IE11 and I would expect new desktop images don't include it.

Reading this document (page 7 for example) there are extra additional steps to enable IE mode that are going to add to the complexity of the operating environment for PA.  This also assumes that IT departments are going to play ball, playing devil's advocat where do we go if ITs position is "well IE11 was removed because it was insecure, so why do I have to enable IE Mode?  Won't that just make my infrastructure insecure again?  We're not doing it."  This is just another difficult conversation with IT.

Would be good to know what the plan is @IBM?

    Hi Stephen

As I understood, it from what I got from PA support, it is not actually IE that is required or a Browser, but Trident. As long as trident is still on the PC then it should be ok. As I understand it Trident as part of Win10 is supported until 2029, therefore I am not surprised that IBM are not yet in a position

where they have a fix ready.

When our project matures I will of course be testing before they remove anything from our machines and will of course feedback the results into this community.

    Kind regards

Reading around I've not been able to find out much clarity.  Some basic questions

    1.  If you only need Trident, the technology on which IE 11 is based, is that part of the base win 10 install or do I have to have Edge installed?
    2.  If I have to have Edge installed (versus no Edge and Chrome say) then do I also need to have IE mode activated and configured?
    3.  If I need IE mode active then what configuration is required?

    Hi Steven

I hope to answer these questions soon when I get a test machine, however for now I simply don't know.

    Kind regards

    Hi Steven,

Interestingly I found this on the blog regarding the IE decommissioning:

The MSHTML (Trident) engine is the underlying platform for Internet Explorer 11. This is the same engine used by IE mode and it will continue to be supported (in other words, unaffected by this announcement). Both WebOC and the MSHTA app will continue to be supported as they rely on the MSHTML engine which is unaffected by this announcement. If you have a custom or third-party app that relies on the MSHTML platform, you can expect it to continue to work. For future app development, we recommend using WebView2.

As PAfE does not actually use IE or Edge, just the underlying platform, PAfE should continue to work without issue, regardless of whether you have IE mode on.

    Kind regards

    Phillip,
It looks like WebView2 is now enabled for PAfE 2.0.74.
