We did finally get it working, but with some caveats.
1. It works using Kerberos authentication, so it still has difficulty when a user wants to use a device not on our network.
2. We spent a long time playing with https rewrite settings in IIS.
3. Ultimately, what got us working was following the steps from Kiran above and then tweaking until we got it working.

Subject: Issue displaying CA content in an iFrame - Invalid Login Response
I'm really hoping someone can help me with this. Our company wants to expose Cognos Analytics reports (on premise) within an iFrame in a web application not hosted on our servers. We are using SSL. When I test an iFrame with a link to Cognos, either just the home page or a specific report with no prompts, I get an error message on what looks like the login page that says "Invalid login response" and no option to enter credentials.
We have tried with and without SSL and with and without single sign-on.
Can anyone help me?
