Cognos 11.1.5 Data Sets Hacking

  • 1.  Cognos 11.1.5 Data Sets Hacking

    Hi!

Does anyone know how to enable Report like mode to Data Sets in new Cognos 11.1.5?

Until release 11.1.4, we could use combination Ctrl + Alt + M.

But in this latest release is not working.

    Thanks in advance!

Hi Jeam.  We use this feature in 11.1.3 extensively - so I hope someone replies soon with an answer.  Otherwise we won't be able to upgrade to 11.1.5...

    Richard,

I opened a PMR questioning this.

I really don't understand why they don't unlock these features.

I have been working with Cognos for 13 years, since 8.2. IBM has been abandoning great solutions like Framework Manager and Transformer. Solutions that have leveraged Cognos in the BI market.
They tried to promote the Dynamic Cube, but it was a very academic solution, lacked the flexibility of PowerCube and was complex when there was a need to report different data marts and subjects. We had to create a complex and rule-packed virtual cube.

Then they release Data Sets and Data Module! A big step towards optimizing reporting performance! Great! I was happy! And the Data Set uses the Report engine. It had all chance to be a great, amazing thing. But I don't understand the reason for hiding Report functionality in the Data Set. It would be so much easier to put a Save As Data Set option in Report.
We could create complex sets, load them and use them in reports, making users much happier with response time. Just as there are this kind of features in Qlik and Tableau.

But no, IBM has to lock this and leave us with no choice.

I have two dreams by now: Transformer 64 bits (one of the best tool for optimizing that I ever seen) and Report features in Data Sets

IBM, don't forget: old is gold too. And works very fine! (FM e PC)

Let us know what Cognos says about this.  We would like to encourage our users to take advantage to data sets.  The reporting functions make it move usable.

I haven't found a solution to get the full UI working. Even setting the perspective in the URL is overriden once the report loads. Is this a challenge IBM? It feels like a challenge.

So far the only solution that I've seen is to take the report XML and load it in the dataset.

First, create the list you want in report studio. Follow the rules of the dataset, no grouping, no subtotals, one list.

Open the dev toolbar and make sure the correct iframe is selected.

    In the console type this:

    parent.xml = Application.document.GetReportXml()

Now create a new dataset and in the dev toolbar make sure the correct iframe is selected.

    In the console type

    Application.OpenReportFromXml(parent.xml)

This works in both directions, but be aware that you'll need to do save as to override the existing dataset. I'm pretty sure there's a setting that can prevent the storeID being updated when you overwrite an object, but I can't remember what it is.

In the background it looks like report studio is identifying the type of the object when it opens. I feel like the solution would be to therefore change the type of the object before it's opened. We CAN do it by finding the object in the content store database, but I really don't like that solution. My next step will be trying to trace the save as functionality to see if I can piggy-back on that somehow to update the type. In the meantime what I wrote above will work, even if it's not ideal.

    Hi Paul,

Thank you for the technique above.  I tried it today (IE11) and it worked for me.  Certainly not as convenient as Ctrl-Alt-M was, but functional!

I heard from product management at last year's Miami conference that "sourcing data from a report" is on the roadmap.  I don't know that it will manifest as a simple "use a report to source a dataset" option, but considering that the infrastructure is all in place for that, why not, right?

Still interested in IBM's official stance on this functionality per your case, so do please share what you get back - thank you!  And thanks again for doing the work to find a work-around!

I found 3 new idea's that revolve around making improvement to the data sets, if you haven't voted for them please consider voting for them and sharing with your organization.

    Hi Jeam,

We don't have 11.1.5 but the short cut key I use for data set is CTRL+ALT + SHIFT + M . Please try that and let me know if it works.

    Thanks

    It is not working too.
I have tried a lot of combinations, but none has worked.

So old datasets that were working in 11.1.3 are no longer working with 11.1.5? What happens when you try to refresh them, or do they just appear as regular Cognos reports now?

they are working and everything is fine but i can not refresh them.
i can edit them i try to save as but still not possible. I need to tet more to see if i add some additional columns if it will work then
I just get 'data set not refreshed' without any other notice and in the history it say that it was successful.
they are still shown as datasets. The once which ware not edited are possible to refreshed.

The CTRL + ALT + M loophole was indeed closed in 11.1.5 as it wasn't safe to use in that no one was testing or developing those menus and inevitably they would have stopped working at somepoint.

We are looking to allow data sets to be generated from existing reports in a future release of Cognos Analytics.

I even understand this point of view from IBM.
But the option of creating complex datasets is a necessity for users. And we have been complaining about this for a long time.

It is taking a while for Cognos to do like the competitors that allow us to load complex datasets into memory, like Qlik.

We had an option to improve these datasets using these shortcuts and in version 11.1.5 we no longer have. This will make it impossible for many customers to upgrade the version.

    Hi Jason Tavoularis

Is there any plan in future to add Free form SQL directly and other ETL concepts like incremental load in Dataset?

and we could perhaps denormalise table directly in Cognos instead of using a ETL tool.

Like other's raised in this forum may be this way we could have some features of Dataset(Power BI) and qvd's (Qlik).

We are 11.0.12 and I am using the below technique from CognosPaul, try this. I am not sure if this work in 11.1.5

Ctrl-Alt-M was working on 11.1.2. Upgrading to 11.1.5 came with losing this capability

There are enhancements, e.g., when defining a data set full access to queries and ability to bring in report specs and copy/paste queries from other reports, on track for release in 11.1.7 which is on track to release late summer which should alleviate the need to use the hack.

That would be a nice feature to create datasets.
But is the problem with using datasets as a fact table also solved.

    https://community.ibm.com/community/user/businessanalytics/communities/community-home/digestviewer/viewthread?MessageKey=2812384c-96a7-46f1-bf34-d3b3c673cfed&CommunityKey=6b10df83-0b3c-4f92-8b1f-1fd80d0e7e58&tab=digestviewer#bm2812384c-96a7-46f1-bf34-d3b3c673cfed

Otherwise you could create a dataset, but unable to join this to multiple other existing tables.

Yes, that's required feature added to Dataset.

Hopefully, we can add Reports directly as data source as we may want to use multiple reports to create new dataset.
Current option looks is to open one report from Clipboard.

Further, Can it be made available in CA 11.1.6 if can't got immediately to CA 11.1.7?

    Hi Buddhi

Yes, you can add reports to the data set via clipboard - that will give you the queries etc.
It's not part of 11.1.6 since we can't introduce new functionality in older versions.
