  • 1.  Help with 'hiding' a calculated data item column within a crosstab

    Posted Tue October 15, 2019 10:03 AM
    Hi All,

I wondered if I could seek some advice.

I am looking to resolve an issue whereby we are attempting to 'hide' an calculated data item column within a crosstab without the problem of all cells 'shifting' to the left whilst leaving the existing grouping above as it were.

Here is an image before the attempt to 'hide' the column.

Crosstab before attempt to 'hide' column

Here is what happens once we have 'hidden' the column.
Crosstab after attempt to 'hide' column

Can anybody advise if they have came across this issue before please?

    Many thanks

Further to the above, one attempt to remove the Monthly Average that worked to a degree, was where we managed to hide the Month header, then cut the Monthly Average, and replaced the month by dragging it back in above the Tokens. What we did find though is that the conditional formatting was lost in this process, as it is relied upon.

@James Jones - for HTML output, you can format the column by adjusting the padding and  size and overflow to 0 so it will shrink the column so it will not display (Also may need to remove the text). However, this will not work if you are outputting to Excel.

I will also test this out to see if there is a better solution, but just so I understand what you are looking for... You want to "hide" the column Monthly Average without the cells shifting? and the conditional format that is set on Tokens Used, is based on the Monthly Average Calc?

@DENNY NAREZNY Thank you very much for your response.

I have tried your initial suggestion however I still cannot get the column to 'hide' or 'vanish' as it were.

"You want to "hide" the column Monthly Average without the cells shifting? and the conditional format that is set on Tokens Used, is based on the Monthly Average Calc?"

    This is absolutely correct.

I use the Box Type = None feature with additional 'Crosstab Space:with fact cells)' to hide columns or fields on a report but still be able to refer to it in the table. It gets a bit confusing at times when working with crosstabs, not very user friendly but I found that it helps adding an ugly background color to the fields when in design mode and when showing the Hidden Objects helps greatly.

Attached is a sample report in design mode with the Hidden Objects showing. Everything that has a yellow or peach background is Box Type = None. End result is that my crosstab that had 2 columns (rows) is showing only one but using the other for grouping. Crosstab rows by default have no headers but because I am hiding the corner of the crosstab but showing only the header of a Crosstab Space, it becomes the header in the output for the row.

I also have additional ranking columns that I use to be able to create conditional formatting. In these cases the ranking is hidden by Box Type = None but can be used for highlighting top and bottom numbers.

The end result can be checked easily in design mode by not showing the Hidden Objects.

    Hope this helps.
