    Hi,
We are using Google Chrome to access Cognos Analytics 11.1.5.
This month, Chrome is pushing an update (86.0.4240.75) in which Cognos becomes unworkable.
e.g. Opening a folder in a Package by clicking on the little arrow doesn't work, switching from page design to page preview generates errors, the buttons on the prompt page stopped working, ...
Does anybody know more about this problem?  Is there a workaround or fix ?
    Thank you for your reply,
    Stephan

    Hi,

We are on 11.0.11 and we already see similar problems with chrome 86. Unable to create/edit/run reports with full interactivity set to Yes. Chrome 86 was released on Oct 6th. There were similar issues in 11.1.7 with chrome 85 for which IBM released an IF2. This is going to be a mess; we have hundreds of uses who are effected and complaining. There is an APAR related to this that was created yesterday - https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/apar/PH30333?cm_sp=swgimgmt-_-OCSSTSF6-_-E&mync=E&mynp=OCSSTSF6&myns=swgimgmt. With many recent events related to chrome upgrades, wish IBM stays one step ahead and check the beta versions of the browser.

This has been a problem since we started using Cognos back in 2005.  Cognos never attempted to keep up with the various browser changes and ONLY supported IE.

Though we require our users to use Chrome or Firefox for their email and all other access to the Internet, we've had to require they use IE for Cognos.  Even now where IBM is trying to keep up with the ever changing browser landscape it's a fairly impossible task with both Chrome & Firefox rolling out major changes.  Because starting with Cognos 11.x IBM won't make patches available it becomes a time-consuming task for we customers as well, having to open a support ticket to get the patch or have them make one.

So for the foreseeable future we will continue requiring IE 11 for Cognos.  It's still available on Windows 10, you just have to search for it to then pin it to the taskbar for them.  The hope is there will be a patch to support Edge Chromium and then we can switch to that (regular Edge has been quite incompatible).  We've been fortunate that Microsoft doesn't make such massive changes to the browser on a regular basis!

    Hi Wayne,

Edge and Chrome are both based on Chromium open source project and behave the exact same way. Hence pls do not raise your hopes. IE 11 is already kind of a legacy browser for MS since they are trying to position Edge as their main browser.

We have embedded cognos into our product and most of the customers use Chrome. I know from IBM support that they are trying to work on an interim fix for 11.0.13  and 11.1.7 versions but upgrading to these versions for everyone is going to be a HUGE task and this is not sustainable too. Chome updates are coming every other month now and there is no way we can take risk with our customers every time; time to rethink I guess!!! :-)

Maybe IBM can solve this issue if they themselves develop a lightweight dedicated Cognos browser. (or buy a company who has this knowledge)
This is the only way to be independent from other software.
Maybe an idea for a request for enhancement.

I concur Thomas.  That's the only way IBM is going to be able to head this off.  For now we have to require IE to be used with Cognos.

Kiran unfortunately we found 11.1.7 so bug riddled it's a no go for us.  Same as 11.1.6.  The biggest show stopper for us is scheduled reports stop running after about a day and require a server restart.  We first encountered this in 11.1.6 and we quite shocked that it wasn't even fixed in 11.1.7.

Sure we can open support tickets to try to get patches but we're so weary of the community having to be the QA team for IBM now.  These kinds of showstopper bugs should NEVER make it past their own QA / QC which sadly I'm guessing no longer exists.

MAYBE 11.1.8 will have these fixes but then what big bugs are going to be introduced in 11.1.8???

'On ask a question' webinar about a week or so ago, Cognos said the next release will be a major release so it probably be 11.1.2.  This means 11.1.7 is their stable version and they will release Fix packs for it going forward until the next stable version is annouced.

You mentioned there is problems with 11.1.7 and chrome 86, has a ticket be opened with Cognos yet on it?

Thomas, i hope this was intended as a joke?
IBM has to adhere - just like any other website in the whole wide world / web - to the browser consortium and their evolving product versions.
The choice for creating web applications has huge advantages over building pure software. The only disadvantage is you must ensure compatibility with the browsers, as you no longer control the endpoint in the user interface.

At this point, you only have 4 major products: Chromium based, IE based, Mozilla based and Firefox based. If these browsers change their functionality, to security related enhancements, there is either 2 things IBM can do: - update the product to these changes; or - work with the browser developers on a temporary solution.

IE is extremely slow compared to Chrome, when using Cognos Analytics. That is the key reason why so many users adopted Chrome for Cognos Analytics. Chrome is also the #1 used browser in the world right now. I think thus that this browser should get absolute top priority for any developments within IBM.

I just opened a support ticket for this, as I have a user experiencing the same issue.  Originally we were upgrading to 11.1.7, but then that was paused until the issue with Google Chrome was resolved.  Now suddenly I have users in 11.1.5 that cannot open folders/query subjects in packages as well, which seems inline with what your users are experiencing.  However, I have had her use Firefox, and the same issue is present.  Frustrating for sure, these are users that support the business and now they can't do their job.  We'll try IE, as with the last update with Windows, IE was replaced with Edge, which doesn't work well at all.

This interim fix resolves an issue in CA 11.1.7 where in Chrome 85 report execution fails on attempting to retrieve a css stylesheet.

Have they fixed schedule report execution in 11.1.7 yet?  That's why we were unable to go to 11.1.6 and were disappointed to find the same bug existed in 11.1.7.  If you haven't encountered it, for us, scheduled reports would run for about a day and then just stop running.  They might start up again for a few hours a few days later but then just stop again.  The only way to get them going again is to restart the server and then it will only run what's upcoming.  Nothing that was missed will be re-run.

Should NEVER have made it out of their own QA / QC for 2 versions in a row!

Hi Kiran - thanks for your response on this issue and I hope IBM can resolve this issue ASAP. This is sort of major setback for Cognos which is already falling behind some of the other BI tools. I hope IBM comes with some work-around or solution sooner because over 70% people in the world use Chrome browser and it's very hard to tell people to use IE 11. We have noticed similar issue in MS Edge.

It appears that BOTH Chrome and Firefox are now broken. We just upgraded a client from 11.1.5 to 11.1.7 FP1 to overcome an issue with Chrome 85, only for Chrome (to v 86) and FireFox (to v 78.3.1esr) to be updated and for both to break. So frustrating.

    Hi Sven,

IF (Interim Fix) and FP (Fix pack) are two different things. IF is released to fix a particular issue and chrome 85 issues were resolved in IF2. Fix pack consolidates all the IFs into one version, so Fixpack 1 includes IF 1 and IF2 in this case.

    Hello,

We recognize that the recent Chrome 86 update has broken some functionality within Cognos Analytics, primarily in the area of reporting.  Our team is in communication with Chromium to prioritize a resolution to this defect that was introduced.

Until that is addressed, we recommend that users use another browser and/or consider upgrading to Cognos Analytics 11.1.7 Fix Pack 1 where these issues do not occur.

We have published a news item which provides additional details and will be updated regularly as more information becomes available.

    Hello Veera,

At this time we have no plans to create an interim fix for Cognos BI 10.2.2.  That release reached End of Service in 2018.  Once Google/Chromium addresses the defect introduced in Chrome 86 then BI 10.2.2 should be fully functional again.  In the interim my recommendation would be to use a different browser.

If you are saying your issue occurs with Firefox and IE that I don't think you are encountering the issue(s) that were introduced with the Chrome 86 update that Google released a couple of weeks ago (which would also impact Edge Chromium).  If you need help, please either start a new discussion and post details of your issue and someone will help or raise a case with IBM Technical Support and will be happy to assist.

    Hello,

its not the issue with Chrome there are so many Cognos 11.1.7 functionalities not working in any of the browser i've tried IE, chrome and firefox etc. All browsers are getting crashed when we try to set prompt values or while editing the job try to edit the report options especially click on html page format option white blank screens and simply browsers not responding mode never comes back. I think there are so many functionalities not working in any of the browsers not just Chrome in 11.1.7 may be issue with cognos new version not properly tested all of the features or functionalities in all of the browsers. And now all the developers in dead lock situation due to improper QA/QC. unafortunately we dont have classic viewer to edit the jobs now in 11.1.7.
