Let me build on Robert's reply.
Once you've placed a data item in the "This tab" filter dock, you can click the More button on the right side and choose "Add to canvas".
Doing so will add a check-box widget to the canvas that you can place wherever you wish.
this is not available for the All tabs filter dock; it only works for This tab.

the only workaround I know is to use the filter pane above the dashboard canvas. Unfortunately the filter conditions are not visible in the canvas itself then.
The other way would be to write a custom viz and upload this into Cognos as extension.

Is it possible to create a check box list for selection in the cognos analytics dashboard like below (the left one in the figure below) through any trick? Currently, I can only produce a scroll list by chooosing the list option in visulaization, where multiple items can be selected by pressing control key (the right one in the figure).
