Within dashboards, I would like to know how to turn off the visualization zooming feature. It is driving my users crazy and I haven't had a use case yet that was helped by zooming.
    We are on 11.1.3

    Hi Rashad,

To the best of my knowledge, the ability to zoom in / out and pan on certain visualization types when your focus is on them is default behaviour that cannot be disabled / turned off.

It is there to provide customers with the ability to get a closer look and focus on points on their visualizations when there are lots of other points competing for their attention. It serves a few use cases. For example, allowing a customer to get a closer comparison of a couple columns on a Column visualization where there are many columns of similar height.

That being said, the ability to pan and zoom is meant to enrich your users' dashboard experience. If it's taking away from their experience we'd be keen to learn how we can make it better for our customers. Are you able to share where / how your users are getting stuck?

    Hi Brennan, thanks for responding.

Let's take the example of a dashboard which contains a bar chart at the top and a bunch of content below that.
If you are a user on a laptop, you will likely need to scroll from the top of the dashboard down the page to the content at the bottom - no problem right?
Not until your mouse hits that bar chart - then the visualization zoom feature on the bar chart takes over and does two things: 1) turns a pretty bar chart into a kind of meaningless blob (by zooming) and 2) it forces the user to have to find the safest placement of the mouse to scroll to where they want to go.

My users are troopers and don't complain much about it, but when I watch them to learn their patterns, it pains me to see this.
I totally get the logic of this feature, but I definitely think it should be more 'opt-in' somehow.

    Hi Rashad
I completely understand your pain as my end users are already complaining and wanted to switch off zooming in . We should have a option to on or off this .

IS there a workaround for the time being ?

I have started leaving a strip of unused dashboard space on the far right so that end users have a "safe" zone to use their mouse's scroll wheel. Zooming on dashboard items is an understandable feature, but it just doesn't line up with a user's daily constant scrolling behavior. They scroll on every site, doc, spreadsheet, and email all day long without a thought - then when they are interacting with a Cognos Dashboard suddenly that same behavior not only doesn't perform the intended task of moving them down a page of content, it actually surprises/punishes them by causing what they were looking at to change.

Not a huge deal, but one of those things that is hard to train out of a person when the behavior is constantly reinforced elsewhere.

Thank you all for the feedback! I'll be sure to share this with the Development and Design team. We know how seemingly minor things can make a big difference.

Some improvements were made to pan and zoom in Cognos Analytics 11.1.6. Has anyone had a chance to try it out on that version? We would be interested to hear what you and your users think of the improvements.

A quick update to my previous post. Your feedback has been shared with the Cognos Analytics product team and will be taken into consideration for future development work. As I mentioned, we have made some improvements in 11.1.6 that we hope will improve your users' experience. We are committed to making the dashboard experience better with every release, and we would be keen to hear your feedback about how we can improve it for you and your users.

Should you still wish to have an option to have an option to turn off visualization pan and zoom, I would recommend creating an idea and having your users vote on it. Our product team reviews these ideas regularly.
