Transparency is the point: Call Home sends enough information for IBM to identify and resolve issues quickly, and it is intentionally designed not to include application data. This article explains what is called home, why it matters for serviceability, and the data retention limits and access controls.
Problem Reporting — Root Cause Analysis
When the HMC reports a hardware or system event, it includes real time extended error details and event logs (for example iqyylog.log, hmc.eed, sys.eed). These tell IBM exactly what failed and how your system is configured—so remote technical support can help resolve the reported error quickly.
Periodic Health and Inventory — Proactive by Design
Outside of incidents, periodic transmissions include inventory and heartbeat, disk health data, and FLRT information data that includes update and upgrade recommendations. These transmissions provide administrators with better lifecycle planning including recommendations for updates, hardware VPD without any sensitive client data content.
What Never Leaves — Clear Boundaries
Call Home does not transmit customer application data and it does not collect credentials beyond the customer contact information you configure for IBM support representatives to contact your administrative team. Using a distribution email and phone number ensures notifications route to your operations group rather than to a single individual. The boundary is clear: platform diagnostics and configuration, yes; application data and content, no.
Retention and Access — Limiting the Exposure Window
Case-related data is kept for the life of the case and shortly after, while periodic data may be retained longer to improve product quality and recommendations. Access is limited to authorized IBM support personnel and stored on secured systems. In other words, less data is kept, for less time, an intentionally narrow window that aligns well with common vendor risk frameworks.
How This Helps You Approve Call Home Faster
Because the dataset is specifically collected for serviceability of the systems and not the applications or business content running on those systems, security reviews focus on transport, retention, and role access rather than data masking or classification. That shortens approval cycles and lets teams realize the operational benefits—faster root cause analysis, automatic incident reporting, and informed maintenance planning—without concerns about sending application or customer data outside the environment.
