Helping organizations modernize enterprise asset management on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
By Steve Lemme
Throughout my career leading two of Oracle's largest Independent Software Vendor (ISV) relationships and developing Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) products and solutions at Oracle, I’ve met many customers who were not aware that Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) could support their critical business applications.
With IBM Maximo Managed Service now available for deployment on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, more organizations are evaluating asset management not only as a deployment decision, but also as an operational and business model decision. IBM Maximo Application Suite (MAS) enables organizations to move beyond traditional enterprise asset management by combining asset lifecycle management, predictive analytics, embedded AI capabilities, and operational insights. By integrating data from facilities systems, operational equipment, and IT environments, organizations can gain a more unified view of asset performance.
What stands out to me is how Maximo connects the full asset lifecycle. From acquisition through retirement, maintenance, operations, and IT teams can align around shared data and priorities. In practice, this can help organizations pursue improvements in reliability, productivity, and auditability, depending on their environment, implementation, and operational practices.
At the same time, expectations are changing. Clients want to apply AI and analytics more effectively and need cloud platforms that support innovation without adding unnecessary complexity. That is where Maximo on OCI can provide value: when Maximo Application Suite is deployed on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, customers can take advantage of OCI’s performance, flexibility, and enterprise cloud capabilities while using the same cloud platform many organizations use for critical applications, AI workloads, and data.
IBM Consulting Services for Maximo on OCI
In my role at IBM Consulting, we have worked with clients at different stages of their Maximo journey: some new to cloud, others are optimizing existing environments, and others are incorporating Maximo into broader data and AI initiatives. Success goes beyond deploying Maximo on OCI. It requires aligning technology and data with how the business operates.
IBM Consulting brings deep expertise across Maximo and Oracle environments. We support clients end-to-end, from strategy and migration through implementation and ongoing operations.
Our approach is practical and outcome focused. We help clients assess their current state, design architectures for OCI, and integrate Maximo with enterprise systems. We also help introduce AI where it can deliver value and provide managed services to support operations.
More clients are choosing a managed service model because it can help free staff and resources to focus on core business priorities while supporting application performance, modernization, security practices, and compliance-related processes. IBM is responsible for the IBM Maximo managed service offering, including management of Maximo and the applicable OCI infrastructure under the customer’s engagement with IBM. In this model, IBM manages Maximo and the applicable OCI infrastructure under the customer’s engagement with IBM, helping reduce operational burden and support more consistent operations.
Often, we are not just implementing a platform, we are helping organizations rethink how they approach operations and asset reliability, and asset performance. Watch for a future blog on bringing Maximo data together on OCI using Oracle AI Data Platform and IBM AI and on the new business possibilities this can help enable.
Key Advantages of Maximo Application Suite on OCI
If your Maximo Application Suite deployment already uses Oracle Database, OCI can help unlock additional value. Whether you're currently on-premises, using cloud, or operating in a hybrid environment, OCI offers capabilities that can support customer experience, operations, and AI initiatives. Here are several areas where clients may benefit:
- Cost efficiency: A shift to OCI can help reduce infrastructure costs through a pay-as-you-go model and by reducing on-premises and infrastructure complexity. At the same time, Maximo can help improve maintenance planning and support longer asset life. Together, these capabilities lower total cost of ownership and support more predictable operating expenses, depending on each customer’s environment and implementation.
- Performance and throughput: OCI’s high-performance, low-latency infrastructure is designed to support responsive Maximo environments. This can help teams execute work with improved visibility and business insight. Maximo adds value by helping prioritize maintenance based on asset condition and risk.
- Flexibility and scalability: With OCI, resources can scale up or down as demand changes. This flexibility can help avoid overprovisioning while supporting performance needs. Maximo aligns by scaling maintenance workflows and helping work execution keep pace with operational needs.
- High availability and disaster recovery: OCI resilience capabilities help minimize downtime and support business continuity objectives. During disruptions, these capabilities can help keep systems accessible and stable, depending on the architecture and customer configuration. Maximo helps support continuity by keeping asset data and maintenance processes available to operations teams.
- Integration and automation: OCI supports integration across business applications and automation through cloud-native tools. These capabilities can create a foundation for more connected operations. Maximo builds on this by helping automate maintenance workflows and improve visibility across asset data. On OCI, organizations can also explore extending Maximo data insights with Oracle AI Data Platform or IBM’s watsonx, depending on their business, security, and AI requirements.
- Risk Reduction and data protection: Security capabilities within OCI and Oracle Database, such as identity and access management, encryption, monitoring, logging, and network security controls, can help support Maximo data protection and governance objectives. These capabilities can help organizations address security and compliance-related requirements as part of their broader policies, controls, and implementation practices. Maximo complements this by supporting auditability and control over maintenance activities.
- Global reach and deployment choice: OCI’s global footprint, including public cloud and private cloud deployment models, allows organizations to deploy closer to end users or in locations that support specific organizational and data residency needs. This can help improve latency and support regional deployment requirements. Maximo helps maintain consistency in asset management processes across locations, strengthening operational data controls.
- Innovation and AI-driven transformation: OCI provides infrastructure designed to support AI and analytics workloads. This can creates a foundation for innovation. By using Maximo’s embedded AI capabilities, clients can support predictive maintenance approaches that may help reduce operational downtime and improve asset reliability, depending on data quality, implementation, and operating practices.
- Flexible management options: OCI supports different operating models from self-managed environments on OCI infrastructure to managed service approaches. This flexibility allows organizations to choose the model that works best for their teams. With IBM Managed Services, clients can help reduce operational complexity while continuing to benefit from new Maximo and AI enabled capabilities.
For existing on-premises Oracle Database customers running on Maximo, modernizing Oracle Database environments on OCI can help simplify operations and may enable organizations to:
- Use Oracle Bring Your Own License, subject to applicable terms, conditions, and licensing requirements.
- Gain additional monitoring and performance insights for Oracle Database environments.
- Explore IBM Granite Models on OCI for AI use cases in regulated industries, subject to each organization’s governance, security, regulatory, and implementation requirements.
- Consider additional Oracle Database deployment choices, including Oracle AI Database@Azure, Oracle AI Database@AWS, Oracle AI Database@Google Cloud.
- Choose whether to manage the environment directly or work with IBM for have it as a managed service.
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure provides a strong foundation for enterprise applications like Maximo. For existing Oracle Database users, OCI’s cost, performance, and security capabilities are especially compelling when they are aligned with the customer’s architecture and business requirements. OCI is designed to support secure, scalable, and high-performance enterprise workloads. For organizations using Oracle Database, moving to OCI often can be a natural next step, with added flexibility and improved visibility.
From my perspective, the value comes from how these elements work together. Maximo Application Suite delivers asset lifecycle management capabilities, while OCI provides infrastructure designed to help scale enterprise workloads. As a long-standing provider of Oracle services, IBM Consulting helps connect the two, helping technology decisions translate into business outcomes.
With a managed service option available from IBM, clients have more flexibility in how they adopt this model, whether they want full control, full support, or a hybrid approach. This is not just about moving to the cloud. it is about enabling more reliable, efficient, and resilient operations.
