What’s New Across z/OS 3.2 2Q 2026
Enterprise platforms today are expected to do two things at once: scale intelligence and streamline operations. With z/OS 3.2 Continuous Delivery (CD) in the second quarter of 2026, IBM Z continues its evolution toward a platform that is designed for enterprise AI and simpler by default—without compromising the resilience, security, and control that define mission‑critical computing.
IBM z/OS 3.2 was announced on July 22, 2025, and became generally available on September 30, 2025. With these latest z/OS 3.2 CD updates and the launch of the new IBM Z Simplification community, IBM is accelerating this evolution, making the platform easier to adopt, easier to operate, and easier to integrate across hybrid cloud environments.
This quarter’s delivery reinforces two tightly linked themes:
- AI where it matters most: bringing intelligence closer to enterprise data, with strong governance and predictable performance.
- Simplification as a platform discipline: reducing operational complexity and enabling automation and AI‑infused operations at scale.
Together, these updates reflect a broader direction for IBM Z—not incremental modernization, but sustained progress toward a platform that is powerful, intuitive, and ready for the next decade.

AI on IBM Z: From Enablement to Operational Reality
IBM Z’s AI strategy continues to prioritize where AI runs and how it is operated. Rather than pushing intelligence away from core systems, IBM brings AI to the data—reducing latency, strengthening governance, and simplifying architectures.
Intelligent Operations in the Core of z/OS
This delivery advances AI‑infused system behavior within z/OS:
- AI‑powered network outbound batching expands support beyond OSA‑Express Data (OSD) to include OSA‑Express Network (OSH), improving efficiency for outbound network traffic.
- AI Framework for z/OS now supports MLz update 3.2.0.26 and SAF authorization, improving governance, access control, and auditability for workloads related to AI-infused z/OS.
Together, these capabilities advance IBM Z’s AI‑infused foundation by embedding intelligence directly into system behavior and core operations, improving efficiency, resilience, and decision‑making while enabling more autonomous, insight‑driven system behavior.
Scaling AI with z/OS Container Extensions (zCX)
z/OS Container Extensions (zCX) continues to mature as the foundation for running Linux‑based AI and cloud‑native workloads alongside z/OS applications:
- Support for multiple image registries allows zCX 2.0 environments to be provisioned with up to ten registries, removing the previous single‑registry limitation.
- Removal of the former 1 TB guest memory limit enables larger, more memory‑intensive AI workloads to run closer to core enterprise data.
These enhancements expand zCX’s role as a scalable execution layer for AI workloads, enabling larger, more complex AI models to run closer to enterprise data and improving overall performance and efficiency.
Simplification & System Management
Simplification ensures that advanced capabilities are easier to consume, automate, and manage.
Faster, Easier System Management
- DFSMSdfp Cloud Data Access (CDA) enhances object storage access with a z/OS UNIX–based gdkutil utility, enabling users to work directly from the UNIX environment. It delivers the full functionality of the traditional batch JCL–based GDKUTIL while eliminating the need to build and submit JCL, making it easier for automation tools like Z Open Automation Utilities (ZOAU) to integrate. With built‑in JSON output, gdkutil supports modern, streamlined automation and simplifies downstream processing.
This capability aligns with IBM Z’s broader simplification goals: streamlining operations, enabling automation, and improving operator efficiency.
Security, Cryptography, & Standards Compliance
This quarter’s updates strengthen enterprise security, cryptography, and standards compliance while simplifying certificate management and recovery workflows.
Security and compliance improvements include:
- RACF recovery enhancements introduce a new sample that recovers RACF commands from SMF 80 records, enabling administrators to bring an offline RACF backup database up to date and streamline recovery scenarios.
- SAF/RACF enhancements for certificate lifecycle management introduce new functions for policy‑driven automation of SAF/RACF certificate renewal that can be used in conjunction with IBM zSecure Secret Manager and leverage Certificate Authorities such as IBM Vault Self‑Managed for Z and LinuxONE.
- IPv6 enhancements in z/OS Communications Server bring compliance with NISTv6‑r1 (NIST publication SP500‑267Ar1) and USGv6‑r1 (NIST publication SP500‑267Br1) IPv6 profiles.
- Support for RFC 7427 in IPsec enhances cryptographic support for IPsec by adding RSASSA-PSS as a supported signature method for peer authentication during IKEv2 security association exchanges. This enhancement is based on RFC 7427, which introduces an updated authentication payload format and support for signature hash algorithm negotiation.
Scale, Availability & Infrastructure
As environments grow in data volume, workload diversity, and hybrid integration, z/OS 3.2 continues to expand scalability and operational headroom.
Storage & Data Management
- z/OS extends support for VSAM linear data sets (LDS), defined as Unix System Services zFS file systems, to exceed the four-gigabyte size limit when SMS-managed and non-extended-format, reducing exposure to out-of-space conditions and supporting larger zFS aggregates.
- DFSMSdfp Cloud Data Access (CDA) adds support for Deep Archive (Glacier) storage classes, enabling users to take advantage of cost‑efficient cold cloud object storage for long‑term data retention. CDA introduces new capabilities to check object availability and restore archived objects directly from z/OS, eliminating the need to use cloud provider interfaces before access. These enhancements strengthen hybrid cloud storage architectures, allowing users to define archive policies, leverage multiple storage tiers, and seamlessly manage and access data across disk, tape, and cloud—while balancing cost optimization with data accessibility requirements.
System Management & Tooling
- SMF job limit (SMFLIM) processing enhancements introduce new SMFLIMxx parmlib options to customize job attributes, including region size checking and optional bypass of the IEFUSI installation exit, and expand SMF type 30 records with additional Storage and Paging fields.
- Non-disruptive System-Managed (SM) Coupling Facility (CF) Structure Copy Process for Lock Structures exploits new z17 server capabilities that avoid disruption to data-sharing workloads while starting / restarting CF duplexing or SM rebuilding of a structure.
Applications can continue accessing the structure while the CF pushes updates to a new instance of the structure during copy processing.
