Accelerating European Data Workloads: IBM watsonx.data integration (beginning with bulk/batch from DataStage) is now available in the London region

Today, data is being generated everywhere, across devices, applications, and digital interactions, at a pace that continues to accelerate. Global data volume is projected to reach roughly 181 zettabytes in 2025, a dramatic increase over prior years. And with organizations pushing for deeper investments in AI initiatives, this growth is only intensifying, alongside stricter expectations around how and where data is stored, processed, and governed.

As data proliferates across regions, clouds, and on-prem environments, data sovereignty becomes a first-order concern. Organizations must be able to process and execute data pipelines as close to the data as possible, minimizing unnecessary movement while ensuring compliance with local residency, privacy, and security regulations. Achieving this requires data integration solutions that can scale with explosive data growth and meet diverse workloads where data already lives.

Enter watsonx.data integration

IBM watsonx.data integration delivers exactly what modern organizations need with a modular suite of data integration capabilities. Through a unified control plane, teams can seamlessly switch between batch ETL/ELT, streaming, replication, and unstructured data integration, ensuring the right integration pattern for each workload while avoiding lock-in to any single point solution. Furthermore, the product is built on top of a foundation which enables data quality and lineage use cases, providing deep visibility into pipeline behavior and enabling users to trace data origins, surface metadata insights, and remediate issues.

This flexibility extends beyond integration patterns - it’s also baked into how pipelines are built. With watsonx.data integration, users can choose the authoring experience that best fits their skill set:

  • Python SDK for highly customized, programmatic pipeline development with versioning and automation

  • Drag-and-drop UI with hundreds of out-of-the-box connectors and transformations, from simple to complex workflows

  • Data Engineering Agent (private preview) for accelerating pipeline creation through an agentic experience that translates user intent into executable pipelines

By supporting diverse pipeline development styles, watsonx.data integration empowers teams across skill levels to build and operationalize pipelines more efficiently.

Building on this flexibility, watsonx.data integration eliminates workload friction by enabling organizations to integrate data wherever it resides - on-premises or across public, private, or hybrid cloud architectures. Teams can additionally leverage remote engines to combine the simplicity of a fully managed service with the control and privacy of a self-managed, containerized runtime deployed behind a firewall or in a cloud VPC.

Today, batch ETL/ELT functionalities in watsonx.data integration, powered by DataStage, are available as a fully managed service in the Dallas, Frankfurt, Sydney, and Toronto regions on IBM Cloud, as well as AWS in the Mumbai and GovCloud regions. With our latest release, we’ve expanded DataStage availability to the new IBM Cloud London region, bringing the scalable ELT/ETL data integration capabilities closer to customers across the UK and Europe.

What does this expansion mean for our customers?

The expansion of batch ETL/ELT on watsonx.data integration to the IBM Cloud London region directly addresses organizations operating under stringent regulatory and sovereignty requirements. Customers can now ensure their data is stored and processed in accordance to local data protection laws, including GDPR and UK-specific regulations.

Beyond compliance, this expansion delivers tangible performance benefits. By processing data where it resides, organizations can dramatically reduce latencies and data movement costs. These benefits only compound when combined with the additional flexibility in integration patterns, autoscaling, and partitioning that come built-in to watsonx.data integration.

With this release, users can begin building batch pipelines in IBM Cloud London today (including remote engines, deployable anywhere) and scale out to additional patterns as watsonx.data integration’s deployment options continue expanding in 2026. This gives organizations the freedom to leverage solutions that meet both their technical and regulatory requirements, without any compromises.

What’s next

In a world where data is growing at an exponential rate, watsonx.data integration remains committed to helping organizations integrate data efficiently, regardless of where it resides or what format it takes. By providing choice across integration patterns, authoring styles, and deployment options, we're delivering on our promise to make data truly actionable and accessible.

The expansion of batch ETL/ELT functionality to IBM Cloud London is just one piece of the story; we’re continuing to invest in broader regional availability, enhanced AI capabilities, and richer functionality across the watsonx platform to make data integration faster and smarter.
