🌟 Introduction
With the latest release of the IBM FlashSystem 9.1.2.0 in 26Q1, IBM FlashSystem brings a powerful wave of enhancements across the platform, but among all the improvements, one feature stands out as a true game‑changer for storage and SAN administrators: IBM FlashSystem Auto Zoning.
As part of the broader product refresh — including the updated FS5600, FS7600, and FS9600 systems built on the latest FCM5 technology — IBM has placed a strong emphasis on simplifying and automating traditionally complex infrastructure tasks. And nowhere is this more evident than in the introduction of Auto Zoning, a feature designed to finally eliminate the slow, manual, error‑prone workflows that have defined SAN zoning for decades. Auto Zoning delivers dramatically faster deployments, cleaner fabrics, and a fully automated zoning experience that transforms how host connectivity is configured in modern data centers.
This blog dives into what makes Auto Zoning so impactful, how it works behind the scenes, and why it represents one of the most important features introduced in the 9.1.2.0 release.
✨ The Challenge with Traditional SAN Zoning
Setting up SAN connectivity has always been a slow, manual, and error‑prone task. Storage and fabric teams need to:
- 🔍 Collect host WWPNs
- 🎯 Pick the right target ports
- 🧩 Create and validate zones across multiple fabrics
- 🔁 Repeat the same steps every time a host or path changes
This results in long deployment cycles, back‑and‑forth tickets, and a high chance of configuration mistakes and human errors.
🚀 Introducing IBM FlashSystem Auto Zoning
With IBM FlashSystem 9.1.2, IBM introduced Auto Zoning, a feature designed to remove the complexity and manual effort traditionally involved in SAN zoning.
Auto Zoning enables inline communication between FlashSystem arrays and Fibre Channel (FC) switches, automatically identifying initiator WWPNs, selecting storage target ports, and creating the required peer zones without switch‑side intervention.
✨ This dramatically reduces administrative overhead, configuration errors, and deployment time.
🛠️ How Auto Zoning Works – A Technical Overview
Auto Zoning is built on Target Driven Zoning (TDZ) Fibre Channel Feature.
The feature is supported only on Brocade switches running Fabric OS (FOS) 9.1.1 or later, with TDZ explicitly enabled by the fabric administrator on the switch ports connected to FlashSystem target ports.
With TDZ enabled fabric, FlashSystem can drive zoning operations directly, ensuring reliable and consistent host‑to‑storage connectivity.
With Auto Zoning, administrators can configure a host with just a few clicks, replacing the traditionally long and error‑prone zoning workflow with a fast, automated process.
Step 1️⃣ — Create an Auto Zoning–Enabled portset
Auto Zoning integrates tightly with FlashSystem FC portset framework, which defines which target ports a host can access.
✔️ Supported only on user‑defined portset
✔️ Administrators may create an Auto Zoning enabled portset manually or use the one generated automatically during system initialization
✔️ The portset must include FC target ports connected to Brocade switches with TDZ enabled and demonstrate symmetrical fabric connectivity

Step 2️⃣ — Create the Host and Associate It with the portset
A host can be created in two ways using:
- 🖥️ Fabric Device Management Interface (FDMI) Host Name (recommended): FlashSystem discovers the hosts automatically from the fabric
- ✍️ Manual WWPN Entry: Administrators manually specify initiator WWPNs
During host creation, the administrator simply selects host discovered through FDMI and the Auto Zoning enabled portset.

Step 3️⃣ — Zones Automatically Created in the Fabric
After the host is created:
- 🤝 FlashSystem pairs initiator WWPNs with the correct target ports
- 🌀 Peer zones are created on all connected Brocade switches
- 🔧 IBM FlashSystem applies and manages zoning updates in the background
- ⚡ The host comes online within moments with all required paths active
Administrators may validate the zones on the switch.
