A Day in My Life as a Global Success Coach in the IBM Z Ecosystem

By Rogerio Vilela posted 04/20/26 05:55 PM

My Role

I support the next generation of IBM Z professionals as a Global Success Coach.
My role is not to teach Mainframe technology directly, but to enable learning success — helping learners stay engaged, navigate complexity, and feel supported as they build skills in the IBM Z ecosystem.

I work closely with learners, instructors, and subject matter experts across regions and languages, acting as a bridge between learning content, community, and real human experience.

What My Day Looks Like

A typical day for me includes:

  • Supporting learners from different countries, cultures, and professional backgrounds as they move through IBM Z learning paths
  • Facilitating and moderating SME sessions in Spanish and global forums, ensuring conversations flow and questions are surfaced
  • Helping learners clarify doubts around courses, labs, and learning expectations — especially when everything feels new or overwhelming
  • Answering questions that range from very basic to “this actually connects a lot of things together”
  • Continuously learning myself through courses, badges, and conversations to better understand the ecosystem I support

Every day is different, but the focus is always the same: making learning feel accessible and achievable.

A Moment That Stuck With Me

One moment I won’t forget happened during an SME session when a learner hesitated before asking a question. They paused, apologized for the question being “too simple,” and almost didn’t ask it.

Once the question was shared, it unlocked a deeper discussion and helped several others who had been silent but were facing the same confusion.

It reminded me that learning challenges are often shared — they’re just not always voiced.

That moment reinforced how important psychological safety and encouragement are in complex technical learning environments.

The Impact

What makes this role meaningful is seeing learners move from uncertainty and hesitation to confidence and steady progress.

Some learners begin quietly attending sessions. Over time, they start engaging, asking questions, earning credentials, and imagining themselves as part of the IBM Z future.

Knowing that many of these learners will go on to support critical systems that organizations and industries depend on makes this work incredibly rewarding.

What People Often Don’t Realize

Supporting learning in the Mainframe space isn’t just about technology.

It’s about:

  • building confidence
  • helping learners trust the process
  • encouraging curiosity and resilience
  • creating an environment where it’s safe not to know — yet

Technology can be complex.
Feeling supported makes learning possible.

Advice for Future Learners

If you’re learning IBM Z or considering this path:

  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions — chances are others have the same ones
  • Focus on fundamentals and consistency, not speed
  • Engage with the community — learning is stronger when it’s shared

Education isn’t about reaching a finish line quickly.
It’s about progress, persistence, and growth over time.

From my perspective as a Global Success Coach, one thing is clear: when learners feel supported, the entire IBM Z ecosystem becomes stronger.
