Collected data is packaged and transmitted securely to IBM's eSupport  infrastructure over HTTPS (port 443). The feature uses retry logic to handle temporary network interruptions, ensuring reliable delivery even in environments with intermittent connectivity.

Local archiving

Before transmitting, Call Home saves a local copy of every data package. These archive files are stored in human-readable JSON format, giving administrators full visibility into exactly what was sent to IBM. Archives are retained for a configurable period (7 days by default) and are automatically pruned to prevent unchecked disk growth.

Analysis by IBM support

Once data arrives at IBM, the support team analyzes it to determine whether there are common misconfigurations, best practice violations, or any other issues, and provides solutions to problems encountered on the customer site.

What data does Call Home collect?

Call Home is designed to transmit operational metadata about the server environment, not customer data, backup content, or any sensitive personal information.

The data packages include:

Every package that is transmitted to IBM is also saved locally as an archive file in JSON format. This means administrators can:

Call Home communicates with IBM's support infrastructure through a single, well-defined channel. Data travels over HTTPS to IBM's eSupport endpoint (esupport.ibm.com) on port 443 — the same port used for standard web traffic. This minimizes the firewall changes required to enable the feature.

IBM recommends using DNS resolution for the eSupport hostname rather than hardcoding IP addresses. This approach ensures that connectivity remains stable even if IBM updates the underlying IP addresses over time, without requiring software changes on the customer's side.

From a security standpoint, Call Home follows established best practices: 

  • Data is transmitted over an encrypted HTTPS connection.
  • Archive files contain only operational metadata (not sensitive content).
  • Access to archive files can be controlled through standard file system permissions.
