Oracle Database on IBM Power Virtual Server

By Naved Afroz posted 06/11/26 03:04 AM

How a Deployable Architecture turns weeks of manual setup into hours of automated, repeatable, enterprise-grade provisioning.

IBM Power has been a trusted platform for Oracle Database workloads for more than three decades. Building on this foundation, the Oracle Deployable Architecture on PowerVS enables rapid provisioning of fully configured Oracle environments on AIX.

Whether you need a Single Instance or a Real Application Clusters (RAC) deployment, the entire stack can be delivered end-to-end using Terraform and Ansible β€” providing a streamlined path from infrastructure to a production-ready database environment.

Why IBM Power for Oracle Database

Oracle Database workloads benefit from infrastructure designed for high concurrency, large memory operations, and intensive I/O patterns. IBM Power System provides dedicated capacity aligned with these requirements.

IBM Power Virtual Server is an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offering provided by IBM. The virtual machines deployed on Power Virtual Server are known as LPARs and align with Oracle’s certified on-premises LPAR configuration. Power Virtual Server instances are hosted within IBM Data Centers with dedicated networking and enterprise storage, enabling deployment of mission-critical Oracle database workloads on AIX.

Power systems supports the performance and availability expected from mission-critical Oracle environments.

What Is a Deployable Architecture?

A Deployable Architecture is a pre-validated, production-ready blueprint that combines infrastructure provisioning, software installation, and configuration into a single automated workflow.

Think of it as the difference between a recipe and a meal kit β€” instead of assembling everything yourself, you start with validated components and a predictable outcome.

In the context of Oracle on PowerVS, this means:

  • Infrastructure is provisioned using Terraform
  • Oracle software is installed and configured using Ansible
  • Best practices are applied by default
  • Deployments are consistent across environments

The result is a repeatable process that reduces manual effort and minimize configuration drift.

Architecture of oracle SI & RAC

Architecture in Layers

The Deployable Architecture follows a layered design, making it easier to understand, extend, and operate.

Infrastructure Layer

  • PowerVS instances running AIX, sized for database workloads
  • Storage for Oracle binaries, data files, and redo logs
  • Network configuration, including private interconnects for RAC
  • Optional automation controller node

Automation Layer

  • AIX configuration (users, kernel parameters, storage layout)
  • Oracle Grid Infrastructure installation
  • Oracle Database deployment and initialisation

Access Layer

  • Bastion host for secure access
  • Controlled outbound connectivity for downloads and patching

Database Layer

  • Single Instance (SI) for simpler deployments
  • Real Application Clusters (RAC) for high availability

Storage options include ASM for clustered environments or JFS2 for simpler setups.

Single Instance or Real Application Clusters β€” Your Choice

The Deployable Architecture supports two Oracle deployment profiles. Both are automated, both deploy on AIX on IBM Power, and both are selectable from the same catalog entry.

Scaling Made Simple

Scaling no longer requires hardware procurement cycles or long lead times. Capacity adjustments can be handled through configuration changes, allowing environments to evolve with workload demands.

Getting Started

To begin:

  • Prepare your PowerVS workspace and networking
  • Set up a bastion host for secure access
  • Stage Oracle installation binaries in cloud object storage (COS)
  • Define configuration inputs (compute, storage, deployment type)
  • Trigger the deployment and monitor progress

One Click to a Running Oracle Database

IBM and Oracle have engineered their platforms together for decades β€” a combination trusted by thousands of enterprises for critical workloads. PowerVS extends this foundation, enabling the same proven architecture with a simplified, automated deployment experience.
