Prerequisites

You should have experience working as an IMS databases administrator or system programmer. It is recommended that you take one or both of the following courses or have equivalent experience:

After completing this course, you should understand how to:

·        The structures, characteristics, and features of the IMS physical access methods, and segment layout, pointers, and logical relationships

·        Hierarchic direct (HD) storage, processing HD databases, HD space search algorithm, and HALDB pointers

·        The purpose of secondary indexes and the fields in the index pointer

·        Control interval (CI) layouts, area open and close, data CI format, and DEDB physical organization

·        Sequential dependent segments (SDEPs) and management, area data set with SDEPs, and SDEP segment and CI format

·        Database layouts for:

o   HDAM/VSAM

o   HDAM/OSAM-LDS

o   Data Entry Database

o   PHIDAM/VSAM

·        Types and causes of database corruption and how to detect database corruption

·        Verifying full-function database integrity by using the High Performance Pointer Checker

·        Verifying DEDB integrity by using Fast Path high performance utilities

·        IMS database repair techniques including:

·        Using standard IMS recovery methods

·        Using application repair techniques

·        Running pointer checker on the image-copy of the repaired database
