Make the move to IBM Aspera for desktop today

By Kunal Banshinge posted Thu March 12, 2026 05:58 AM

Organizations moving massive datasets, media assets, and other business-critical files know that the client experience is just as important as transfer speed. IBM Aspera for desktop is the next evolution of the Aspera client experience - combining high-speed transfer technology with a modern, secure, native desktop application built for today’s enterprise environments.

By removing the friction of browser-based tools and plugins, IBM Aspera for desktop delivers a simpler, more reliable, and consistent way for teams to move data at scale, with capabilities such as automatic updates, integrated Cargo file transfers and automation. As enterprise environments evolve and organizations move more data than ever before, the way users interact with transfer tools is evolving as well.

IBM Aspera for desktop was built to meet those needs — providing a modern client designed for simplicity, reliability, enterprise-ready security, and a unified experience for managing transfers and files.

An important milestone to plan for

As part of the continued evolution of the Aspera client experience, IBM is beginning the transition from IBM Aspera Connect to IBM Aspera for desktop.

To support this transition:

  • Support for IBM Aspera Connect when used with Aspera on Cloud (AoC) will end on December 31, 2026.

  • Following this, all Aspera web applications will discontinue support for IBM Aspera Connect starting March 31, 2027. After this date, IBM Aspera Connect will no longer be available for download, and no further security updates or new features will not be provided.

  • Existing installations will continue to function, but no further maintenance updates, security fixes, or enhancements will be provided.

For customers using the IBM Aspera SDK

Organizations integrating Aspera functionality through the IBM Aspera SDK will also need to migrate to the updated SDK compatible with IBM Aspera for desktop.

To support this transition, the following resources are available:

These resources provide guidance on updating integrations and ensuring compatibility with the latest IBM Aspera client experience.

This change is not about abruptly turning off IBM Aspera Connect. Rather, it reflects IBM’s focus on delivering a more modern, secure, and continuously improving client experience through IBM Aspera for desktop.

Planning your transition early helps teams avoid last-minute upgrades and gives organizations time to adopt the new IBM Aspera desktop experience at their own pace while benefiting from its latest capabilities.

Why customers are moving to IBM Aspera for desktop

IBM Aspera for desktop is more than a replacement — it’s a significant step forward in the client experience.

Key benefits includes

  • Faster, more reliable transfers: Built on Aspera’s high-speed transfer technology with improved stability, for large files and long-distance transfers.

  • No browser plugins: No extensions to install, update or troubleshoot. Transfers run directly from a native desktop application.

  • Automatic updates: Stay current without manual installs or version mismatches across teams.

  • Better visibility and control: Track progress, view history, pause or resume activity, and manage transfers from a single interface.

  • Direct integration: Sign in directly to your Aspera environments and manage files without switching between tools.

Why migrating now matters

Adopting IBM Aspera for desktop early isn’t just a technical change, it delivers immediate, practical benefits. Teams that move sooner typically experience:

  • Fewer browser compatibility issues and support tickets

  • Less time spent troubleshooting plugins or updates

  • Faster onboarding for new users

  • Immediate access to new features as they’re released

Most importantly, it positions your organization on the client where IBM is actively investing and innovating. Connect will remain usable for now, but Aspera for desktop is where future enhancements will be delivered.
