Enable Call Home on Power HMC: Configuration & Troubleshooting
This hands-on guide streamlines enablement for operations teams. We’ll walk through prerequisites, a clean configuration path, simple validation checks, and fixes for the issues most likely to block first-time setups that your network and Power admins can act on immediately.
Before You Start — Prerequisites
Verify the HMC is on a supported level so it negotiates modern TLS by default, make sure outbound HTTPS on port 443 is available to esupport.ibm.com (either directly or via your proxy), and prepare a distribution email/phone as the Call Home contact.
Enablement — A Simple Path
From the HMC, open Electronic Service Agent / Call Home settings and choose the network method that matches your policy (direct or proxy). Enter the proxy host, port, and credentials if required. Confirm company/location, add the distribution contact, and enable both Problem Data and Periodic Data so you get fast incident response and proactive recommendations. Save and run the connectivity test to confirm the end-to-end path.
Validation — Quick Checks
Trigger an operational test (heartbeat) and hardware inventory. View the console events or success status, and verify the first periodic inventory and heartbeat complete without errors. In multi-HMC environments, quickly confirm that consoles can discover and coordinate with each other so one server can broker events if another is unavailable.
Troubleshooting — Fix the Issues
If TLS handshake fails, ensure the HMC is updated with the latest code. If there is a proxy, confirm the methods supported and credentials required; for firewall denials, prefer DNS allow-listing of esupport.ibm.com over static IPs so you stay aligned with IBM endpoint changes. If periodic data doesn’t send successfully, verify the reason in the console events and contact IBM Support for further assistance.
Operational Best Practices — Stay Connected
Enable email notifications for success/failure, and review FLRT monthly to plan maintenance windows before risks become incidents. Those habits turn Call Home from a one-time setup into a durable operational advantage.
