Bringing Generative AI to IBM Z

Generative AI is transforming how enterprises work, and now it’s now it’s available coming natively on IBM Z — bringing the future of AI directly to the mainframe. With watsonx Assistant for Z and the new Spyre Accelerator, organizations can scale large language models (LLMs) directly on the mainframe — where their mission‑critical workloads already live. Building on IBM Z’s trusted foundation, this new level of support brings AI that is secured, governed, and resilient by design.

Announcing Db2 for z/OS Agent v1.1.1

IBM Db2 for z/OS Agent is your new virtual co‑worker that lets you ask natural questions about your Db2 subsystems and get quick, live insights — simplifying Db2 for z/OS for everyone.

Version 1.1.0 set the stage by making database management conversational and insightful, introducing subsystem intelligence with x86 support and smart configuration comparisons. It delivered guided reasoning, catalog navigation, NL2SQL, and RAG documentation access — all safeguarded by a read‑only design with human‑in‑the‑loop control.

Now, we’re thrilled to announce that IBM Db2 for z/OS Agent 1.1.1 is generally available, which brings forward all the capabilities of 1.1.0 along with native s390x/Spyre support. IBM Spyre Accelerator brings generative AI directly to IBM z17, enabling enterprises to scale large language models (LLMs) within the trusted IBM Z environment.

Unlocking Enterprise AI on IBM Z

Db2 for z/OS Agent, now supercharged by the Spyre Accelerator, allows you to run powerful large language models directly on the IBM Z mainframe — no detours, no compromises. This breakthrough brings enterprise‑scale AI inferencing straight to IBM Z, enabling generative and agentic AI to run natively where mission‑critical workloads already live. The result? Organizations can scale AI confidently while preserving privacy, governance, and reliability.

With this release, Db2 for z/OS Agent introduces support for IBM Granite foundation models, starting with the Granite 3.3‑8B‑instruct. Optimized and tested to run on IBM Z with Spyre cards for z17 deployments, it’s a milestone that blends cutting‑edge AI with the unmatched resilience of the mainframe.

Flexibility is everything. While Granite models shine on IBM Z, enterprises can also continue deploying Llama‑based models on x86 infrastructure. This dual support gives organizations the freedom to choose models that best align with their performance, compliance, and infrastructure strategy — all while tapping into Spyre’s accelerated, on‑platform execution for AI at scale.

What This Release Unlocks
Db2 for z/OS Agent, together with watsonx Assistant for Z and Spyre, delivers a new era of enterprise AI: secured, scalable, and ready for the workloads that matter most.

  • x86 compatibility → Lets enterprises leverage existing infrastructure and run Llama‑based models where performance and cost align.
  • Native s390x/Spyre support (new in 1.1.1) → Secured, on‑platform AI inferencing with encryption and data residency, keeping sensitive data protected on IBM Z. (New with 1.1.1 release).
  • Conversational system insights → Retrieve subsystem information in natural language, making Db2 management more intuitive.
  • Configuration visibility → Access and compare zParm values across multiple subsystems, helping teams spot differences and optimize settings.
  • Guided reasoning support → Explanations that build context, assisting junior DBAs and accelerating learning.
  • Catalog navigation made simple → Explore schemas, tables, indexes, and tablespaces directly through conversational queries.
  • Natural Language to SQL (NL2SQL) → Generate intelligent catalog queries without writing complex SQL manually.
  • Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG) → Tap into Db2 for z/OS documentation instantly for context‑aware answers.
  • Model Content Protocol (MCP) support → Connect AI seamlessly to external tools and data sources through a universal protocol.
  • Read‑only by design → Ensures safety by providing insights without changing system state, keeping experts in control.
