Activating Content for the Era of Agentic Automation

By Aliannah Muzaffar posted 06/03/26 10:40 AM

AI agents have already changed the way work is being done, but agents are only as effective as the content they access. Enterprises already possess enormous stores of business-critical knowledge in documents, reports, correspondence, statements, images, case files….the list goes on. Businesses have plenty of information, but the challenge is that content remains fragmented, difficult to govern, and challenging to activate for AI-driven work.

This month, IBM announced IBM Content Cortex (planned availability in June 2026), a next-generation content services system designed to prepare, govern, and activate enterprise content for agentic automation. Content Cortex represents a new paradigm for transforming content repositories from passive systems of record into trusted foundations for AI-powered business operations.

Coming Soon: IBM Content Cortex

Centralize Content

Organizations can bring together fragmented enterprise content into a trusted source of truth for both employees and AI agents

Govern Content

Security, compliance, retention, and governance remain embedded throughout the content lifecycle, ensuring that content remains trusted and usable as AI adoption expands

Activate Content

Content becomes usable for agentic automation by making it discoverable, enriched, and accessible to AI agents

Did you know?

IBM Content Cortex and IBM Bob can accelerate customization

One of the most powerful aspects of an enterprise content services solution is the ability to adapt to unique business requirements through custom plugins, event actions, integrations, and code modules. Historically, building these extensions required specialized development expertise. IBM Bob is helping lower that barrier by assisting developers through the software lifecycle, making it easier to create and refine custom extensions that help organizations unlock more value from Content Cortex. The result is faster experimentation and implementation that creates more opportunities to tailor content workflows to specific business needs.

Agents can execute content operations at scale

The Content Services product management team has been seeing massive ROI examples as we prepare Content Cortex for launch. One example is an AI agent performing 30 content operations across 6 highly complex policy documents in approximately 50 seconds. The agent classified documents, updated metadata values, created new folders, filed reports into their appropriate locations, and removed content from their original folders….all while operating within the governance controls of the platform. While a human could perform the same work, that would take a human around 15 - 30 minutes to complete manually, an 18x to 36x productivity gain.

When content is governed, discoverable, and AI-ready, agents can help organizations automate repetitive tasks while allowing employees to focus on higher-value work. In financial services, this could mean automatically organizing and classifying incoming loan documentation before underwriting begins, while for insurance companies, claims documents could be routed correctly, with updated metadata as soon as new information arrives. In the public sector, agencies could manage large volumes of incoming forms and supporting documentation without creating additional administrative overhead.

Content growth doesn’t have to mean storage growth

As organizations accelerate AI initiatives, content volumes continue to expand. Information accumulates year after year, creating pressure on infrastructure costs and long-term retention strategies. IBM Content Cortex will include Intelligent Archiving capabilities that can deliver compression ratios of up to 30:1 for static content, helping organizations significantly reduce storage requirements while preserving retrieval, governance, and compliance.

Organizations need a solution that can scale efficiently as repositories grow from millions to billions of documents. For financial institutions managing decades of customer statements, healthcare organizations retaining historical patient documentation, insurers preserving policy and claims records, or public sector agencies maintaining long-term archives, intelligent archiving helps balance retaining information for the future while controlling the cost of keeping it.

Why it matters

One of the biggest challenges facing organizations today is dark data: valuable information that exists inside documents and repositories, but remains inaccessible to analytics, automation, or AI initiatives. As organizations invest in AI, they are discovering that both the quality of content and metadata and discoverability can be more significant barriers to scale than the AI technology itself. Content Cortex helps address this challenge by preparing content for AI consumption through enrichment, governance, and activation, helping organizations transform previously underutilized content into a strategic component for getting work done.

Examples in practice

In financial services, banks maintain decades of loan files, customer correspondence, and compliance records. Content Cortex can help enrich and classify this content, so that agents can quickly locate relevant information, update records, and support loan processing workflows wihle maintaining governance controls.

In insurance, claims processing often involves large volumes of documents arriving from multiple sources. Content Cortex can help classify content, extract relevant information, and route documents to the appropriate places, reducing manual effort and accelerating resolution times.

In the public sector, agencies managing permits, benefits, grants, or case files can use Content Cortex to centralize content, improve discoverability, and support content-intensive processes without sacrificing compliance.

How you can benefit

  • Activate content and reduce manual effort through agentic content operations

  • Unlock value from previously underutilized dark data

  • Accelerate customization with IBM Bob with IBM Content Cortex

  • Lower storage requirements with intelligent archiving compression of up to 30:1

  • Maintain governance, compliance, and security throughout the content lifecycle
