We’re excited to announce a powerful new integration between IBM Turbonomic, a leader in Application Resource Management, and Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization. OpenShift Virtualization extends OpenShift by adding support for virtual machines (VMs) alongside containers. Powered by KubeVirt and the KVM hypervisor, OpenShift Virtualization lets you run, manage, and migrate Linux and Windows VMs. For organizations focused solely on virtualization, Red Hat also offers OpenShift Virtualization Engine, a dedicated edition of OpenShift that provides the same proven virtualization capabilities without the container platform and application development and delivery features.
Turbonomic has long delivered trusted automation and optimization capabilities for container workloads on OpenShift. Now, we’re extending that same level of support to VM workloads on OpenShift Virtualization. This means organizations can run, deploy, and optimize both new and existing VM workloads on OpenShift Virtualization with confidence.
Turbonomic is a platform designed to manage and optimize application resources automatically. It continuously checks resource demands and provides clear recommendations and automated adjustments to keep applications running smoothly and efficiently.
Red Hat OpenShift is an enterprise application platform built on Kubernetes that enables organizations to develop, deploy, and manage VM, container and serverless based applications at scale and on a single platform. It provides a consistent experience across hybrid cloud environments, from on-premises data centers to public clouds and edge locations, with integrated developer tools, automated operations, and enterprise-grade security. OpenShift supports the full application lifecycle, from running existing applications to building cloud-native microservices, enabling organizations to modernize at their own pace while maintaining operational stability.
OpenShift Virtualization is an included feature of OpenShift that enables organizations to run and manage VMs as naturally as they run containers. Built on the proven KVM hypervisor, it supports existing Windows and Linux VMs while providing enterprise virtualization features like live migration, high availability, and VM templates.
Organizations can choose their deployment path based on their needs. The full OpenShift platform unifies VMs and containers under consistent management while providing modern application development capabilities. Alternatively, OpenShift Virtualization Engine offers a virtualization-only, cost-effective edition that delivers the exact same enterprise VM capabilities without the container platform features. Both options include the migration toolkit for virtualization with which, enables smooth migrations from traditional virtualization platforms while maintaining operational continuity.
The integration between Turbonomic and Openshift Virtualization means Turbonomic can now directly support VM workloads on OpenShift. Users will get clear visibility into resource usage, better understand performance, and receive straightforward suggestions on how to optimize their infrastructure.
Initially, Turbonomic supported container workloads on OpenShift but lacked VM workloads support.
Businesses often prefer managing VMs and containers on one unified platform like OpenShift.
Organizations considering a move from VMware now have an easier path to migrate to OpenShift Virtualization.
With this new integration, Turbonomic now supports VMs running on OpenShift, making it simple to manage resources across different environments.
Benefits
Intelligent Sizing: Automatically adjusting resources allocated to VMs and containers.
Avoiding Resource Bottlenecks: Continuously balancing workloads to prevent performance issues.
Dynamic Resource Scaling: Automatically scaling resources to meet real-time demand efficiently.
Proactive Planning: Providing accurate forecasts and clear action plans based on real data.
VMware-to-OpenShift Migration
Enables VMware users to move existing VMs to OpenShift Virtualization and apply Turbonomic's DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler) - like optimization post-migration.
Unified Hybrid Workload Management
Provides centralized Application Resource Management for both containers and VMs running within OpenShift, reducing fragmentation and operational overhead.
Together, Turbonomic and Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization simplify the journey to effective hybrid cloud management. Let’s streamline your cloud operations today
