Question and Answer from "Taking the first steps to move to the hybrid cloud"

Thank you for attending our webcast "Taking the first steps to move to the hybrid cloud".   We received more questions than we could answer, so we are posting the answers in this forum.   If you have additional questions, please post them below and I will answer them.

    1. How complex is the migration of B2Bi on Hybrid Cloud and any recommended approaches you would suggest?

    1. Are you aware of any B2B Integrator customers running on the cloud today?
    • ANSWER - Yes, indeed we do. Unfortunately, none are reference customers at this time so we can't put you in touch with them. We'd be happy to set up time to discuss with myself, lab services or a business partner to share best practices.  Or you might what to post any questions you may have in the discussion forums.

    1. Should I wait for B2Bi to offer a cloud pak before adoption of v6 on containers?
    • ANSWER – Our recommendation for most customers is yes. However, it comes down to the comfort level of your team. Docker, Kubernetes are new skills. My recommendation would be to upgrade to version 6.0 of the IIM, and in parallel start testing the docker version. You can always move from IIM to Docker at no additional cost.

    1. Is it better to setup an on-premise private cloud before we move out to AWS or the Cloud?
    • ANSWER –We recommend starting with on-premise private cloud. With a tool like B2Bi/File Gateway there are many touch points in which latency could be an issue if B2Bi/FG is on the public cloud. You can receive most all of the benefits of public cloud in a private setting, which gives you more management and governance of the data and deployment.

    1. What is pricing model for IBM Private cloud?
    • ANSWER – More to come on this. For now, the pricing model remains PVU based with the Container option. ICP will provide additional options, but they are roadmap at this time.

    1. Are there cost concerns for integration in the cloud with AWS?
    • ANSWER –Same cost concerns as on-premise. The install is PVU based, so with Amazon's elastic capability to add CPUs dynamically that could pose an issue. Best practice, whether on the cloud or on premise is to do a sizing exercise to anticipate peak load. A lot of customers will take that number and multiply it to determine the number of PVUs they require. Your sales team can help with this.

    1. It almost sounds like it would be easier to move to a cloud architecture from scratch than migrating, is this assumption correct?
    • ANSWER - Not necessarily. Most of the data is stored in the database. Moving to a cloud architecture, you can port the database (as it's not containerized). Therefore, while the application layer is net-new, and there may be some on-disk things to migrate (customer_overrides, UI branding, custom jars etc) , the database can be upgraded to bring along the trans and non-trans data such as BPs, maps, envelopes, certificates etc. We can help advise. Please reach out to your sales team for more information.

Thank you for the great questions.   If you have additional questions, please post them below and I will be happy to answer them.
