  • 1.  Unable to start services after Datacap 9.1.7 installation

    Posted Mon January 06, 2020 11:35 AM
I installed Datacap version 9.1.7 for dev work on my machine, pointing to the Access databases that come with the installation.

The databases successfully connect in DC Application Manager, however I'm unable to start DC Server Manager. I get error message 'Windows could not start the Datacap Taskmaster Server service on Local Computer. Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly.' Other people here have had no issue with starting the services, so seems it must be something particular to my settings.

Suggestions for what could be stopping my connecting to services are greatly appreciated!

As an aside, the IBM Datacap instructions for local installation include exporting the key. Is that only when it's a client/server installation, or do I need to export the key in a completely enclosed single machine installation? If so, why is that and where would I be importing the key? I struggle some with the whole key-handling process.

    Thank you.

    Hi,
can you start any exe from your Datacap folders like Datacap Application Manager or Datacap Server Manager using the Windows user, set for the Windows Datacap Manager service???
I presume you have a permission problem Check first the Windows service user permission, the sharing etc..
    Hope it helps,
    dorothea

Thank you for your response, Dorothea. Using the local system logon, I've been able to start DC Windows Service and DC AppDeploy Service all along, but not DC Taskmaster or RuleRunner services.

I tried setting the four services to open with the 'This Account' logon that I believe is the Windows user you talked about (right?) but the same services started and wouldn't start as with local system logon.

The other folks in my office who are able to start all their services are using the local system logon. Also, they do not have sharing set on their Datacap folder so I didn't change mine.

The main difference between their configurations and mine is they're on Windows 10 version 1809, and I'm on 1903. Looks from what I've found online that 9.1.7 is meant to run on 1809, so as well as continuing to work on this problem myself, I'm submitting a ticket to have IBM look at the version.

Does me being on Windows 10 version 1903 sound to you like it could be the issue?

    Thanks again.

MomOfTwo, those keys will be used to decrypt the settings in the App Mgr file, so you will need to export them. They are written to the dc_KTF.xml file, which may need to be placed in several locations on your workstation, depending on which programs you'll be using.

Thank you for the info and links, Robert. I'd used the first one but not the second, so was very helpful.

So on a single machine dev configuration where I'm using the Access database that comes with the installation, I need to export the key in the c:\Datacap\Taskmaster folder ('gnk e') via command prompt, then just manually copy that key to the other locations, right?

When would I use 'gnk i', 'd i', or just 'i', to import via command prompt to generate new, delete and/or import? Or does an import via command prompt do the same thing as manually copying and pasting the key to those folders?

    Thanks again.

Yes, that is correct - for your local instance, generate/export the keys and copy the key file to the required locations.

You would Import if you were trying to sync the keys between two instances of Datacap.  For example, if you had a Dev environment, then created a Test environment and wanted the Test environment to use the same keys as Dev - then you would import the keys into Test.  All the clients in Test would then use the same dc_KTF.xml as their counterparts in Dev.  (Note: I'm not advocating for or against using the same keys in different environments - just discussing when Import would be used.)

    Thank you,

My apologies for taking so long to respond back on this. IBM support confirmed that 9.1.7 runs on Windows 10 build 1903. Turned out the problem definitely was permission related. For an unknown reason, logging on using my Windows account or Local System Account didn't allow DC Taskmaster Service and DC Rulerunner Service to start, but using a particular service account did.

Thank you for your input, Dorothea and Robert.
