When "Always use this connection information" check box is NOT checked, BAW uses CMIS web service with SSO configured to communicate with external ECM.
By default, it is LTPA SSO. Thus if your external ECM server is running in WAS or Liberty, you should configure LTPA SSO with that server.
In BAW traditional ( running on WAS ND) you can use WAS WS-security binding/policies to reconfigure LTPA SSO with something else.
I don't know if the same possible on Workflow running in K8 on Liberty.
Another option is to keep the "Always use this connection information" and make sure you are connecting with a "super user".
You can create an authorization service, which would check if the current user has access to the given resource.
