  • 1.  SevOne as the ping monitoring solution for host availability?

    Hi, I understand that SevOne is capable of monitoring complex Network environments, but my requirement is simpler: Is it possible to implement SevOne to perform host availability tests (ICMP ping up/down) to thousands of hosts on different network zones and locations?
    If yes, which components will I have to deploy as part of SevOne infra? Do we have something like Points of Presence or endpoints that will be responsible for running the ping tests?
    Can I customize the timeout interval? Can I configure it to only generate an alert after X occurrences?

    Could someone please provide some guidance on how to implement a solution like this using SevOne product?

    Thanks for reaching out.   
    IBM SevOne NPM can be setup to perform ICMP ping tests - its part of the core functions of the offering (no additional software required), leveraging the virtual server(s) instances of SevOne NPM you have deployed as part of your deployment.

    I'll let some of the other team members chime in on the configuration options available.

    Hello Marcel,

    With SevOne, if you like, you can just use SevOne's ICMP poller to perform host availability tests to thousands of hosts.  SevOne has a peer-to-peer architecture, so it is possible to scale linearly to the largest networks.  With the ICMP poller, you can customize it on a per node basis with regard to the packet size, number of packets to send, and the interval between the packets.  SevOne also supports proxy ping, which allows you to designate a device on your network as the ping source vs. using the SevOne poller as the ping source.  This helps if you want to view availability and latency from the proxy ping device's standpoint.  SevOne also can discover or provision Cisco IPSLA tests to monitor latency and availability of services.  You can deploy SevOne appliances as virtual machines in different geographic regions and then cluster them into one logical cluster so that reporting is seamless from the end-user's perspective.  You can apply monitoring policies to alert on availability or latency using fixed or dynamic thresholds (deviation from baseline), and can set the duration to consider, the count over threshold, or time over threshold of the samples.

    Hi Marcel

    On top of what Tim and Brian already said, you can launch Ping tests from either a centralised location or from different zones. You can deploy as many 'appliances' as you need to reach those devices you want to ping locally, or use a single appliance to monitor everything from a single place. These appliances can be physical, virtual or in your private cloud.

    One of the great features of SevOne is how different time zones and locations are handled. You can define the time zone and working hours of each device, and you can also choose which time zone you want to use when displaying the data on a report.





    Also you can use different ping frequencies from up to 1 second to x minutes to all the devices or different frequencies to different devices.



    And regarding alerting, there are lots of options to configure the alert you need, including triggering the alert after x times, but also based on normal behaviour.

    - Can I forward 'ping down' alerts to IBM Netcool or Cloud Pak for Watson AIOps? Which outgoing integrations are available today?
    - Where can I obtain environment sizing information to define an architecture (SaaS, on prem)?

    you can integrate SevOne alerts with Netcool or any other tool using SNMP Traps, Webhooks or custom API calls, normally we use webhooks though.

    Regarding sizing, SevOne comes in different sizes and platforms. It can be installed on physical servers, as virtual appliances (OVAs) or in your private cloud, and the servers can be as small as PAS5k (5,000 objects capacity) up to PAS300k (300,000 objects capacity). You can cluster together multiple appliances allowing you to monitor millions and millions of objects in a single platform.
