IBM Instana Observability Self-Hosted releases a new version (version  1.0.229 ) today, August 2, 2022

By PATRICK BUTLER posted Tue August 02, 2022 04:31 AM

This latest release delivers enhancements and additional coverage from what was delivered with version 1.0.227. In this release, you can directly use Instana packages for installation and deployment.  For detailed instructions, see the Instructions.pdf file, which you can download from Passport Advantage

Main features now available to IBM clients in the new release:

APM V8 Integration
  • Metrics from the APM V8 WebSphere Application Server (WAS) agent can be integrated with Instana.
 ITM V6 Integration
  • Metrics from both the ITCAM V7 and APM V8 WebSphere Application Server (WAS) agents can be integrated with Instana.
Application Smart Alerts
  •  Added alerting on the rate of HTTP status code. HTTP Status Codes blueprint now allows defining alerts based on the status code rate metric in addition to the previously supported status code count metric.
Camunda external task tracing
  • Instana now supports Camunda tracing of BPMN external tasks. By using this feature, you can gain visibility into Camunda BPMN external tasks, and automatically link the activity-related sub calls for full context and infrastructure insights.
Apache RocketMQ monitoring and tracing (technology preview)
  • Instana now supports Apache RocketMQ monitoring and tracing as technology preview. For more information, see Monitoring Apache RocketMQ.
Synthetic Monitoring test result details UI (technology preview)
  • The technology preview for Synthetic Monitoring is updated to include a partial implementation of the UI page to view the details of a selected synthetic test run.

SENSOR IMPROVEMENTS

Cassandra Sensor
  • Seed IP Addresses are now displayed on the sidebar of every Cassandra Node.
IBM ACE Sensor
  • Supported access to REST API and MQTT with loopback address.
  • The minimum poll rate is set to 20s to be consistent with the interval of ACE snapshot data.
  • Adopted new threadpool approach to improve performance.
IBM ACE Tracing
  • Replaced the span label msgFlowTransaction with the real message flow name, and changed this span label to the first position, instead of the previously second position following the message flow input node. In this way, users can see more clearly how long the request is processed in this message flow.
  • Supported IBM MQ message header detection, and injected trace context into outgoing request only when the MQRFH2 header is included to avoid breaking users' applications.
IBM i Sensor
  • Added the custom event for inactive Subsystem. Specify the subsystem_list in the configuration user_specification:subsystem. Then, an event will be triggered if the specified subsystems are not in Active status.
  • Added the custom event for Active Jobs that are running less than the specified threshold value. Specify the jobName/user and threshold in the configuration user_specification:activeJobs:event:identicalJobs. Then, an event will be triggered for the jobs that are defined in the configuration if the count of active jobs is less than the specified threshold value at any time.
IBM MQ Tracing
  • Added support for tracing text messages.
vSphere Sensor
  • vSphere version is now displayed on the datacenter dashboard next to the name.
  • Virtual machine state column is added to the VMs table on the host and datacenter dashboards.
NGINX Tracer
  •  Delivered NGINX Tracer 1.7.0
  • Added support for NGINX 1.22.0.
  • Support IPv4 and IPv6 address to connect to the Instana agent.
Envoy Tracer
  • Delivered Envoy Tracer 1.7.0
  • Support IPv4 and IPv6 address to connect to the Instana agent.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS

Alerting
Improved the validation of stored tag-filters in various areas such as SmartAlerts, Application Perspectives and Service Level Objectives (SLOs):
  • Improved the error messages to include more details about the exact problem when invalid tag-filters are provided.
  • Invalid tag-filters are now rejected.
Logging
  • Users can now filter and group log messages through Kubernetes labels.
Settings UI
  • In the Add user dialog, the group selector is now ordered alphabetically.
  • Area scope names that don't fit are now displayed on a tooltip on hover
  • The UI design of the Add API Token button and the following search box are now consistent with the rest of the Settings section.
Application Dashboard metrics
  • Application Dashboard:
    • Top Services metrics are changed. On the Calls tab, CallsPerSecond is added as a companion metric. On the Erroneous Calls tab, now erroneousCalls is used as a primary metric, and errors is used as a companion metric.
  • Service / Endpoint Dashboards:
    •  Top Endpoint metrics are changed. On the Erroneous Call Rate tab, now erroneousCalls is used as a primary metric, and errors is used as a companion metric.
